‘Heartbeat’ is an Australian cultivar that is just making its way into the gardening culture of the United States. 'Heartbeat' would be a great addition to any garden. The leaves are extremely dissected with lobes that are held very far apart, making the overall leaf almost appear round. The habit is very low and spreading forming a plant that is much wider than tall. Spring color is more red and less purple than other similar Japanese Maples. Acer palmatum ‘English Lace’ is one of the very few lace leaf varieties that have an upright habit. While not as decidedly upright as ‘Seiryu’, ‘English Lace’ will still form a nice tree that is large for a Dissectum. Acer palmatum ‘English Lace’ leafs out in spring with red foliage that becomes burgundy later in spring. Acer Palmatum 'Hana Matoi' is an Incredible Variegated Dwarf Japanese Maple Acer palmatum 'Hana matoi' is a variegated dwarf Japanese maple and is one of the most exciting Japanese Maples ever to hit the American market. The pink variegation is phenomenal especially in the spring. The variegation holds up well even in our hot climate and does not often revert like some other variegated varieties. The spring foliage emerges dark red with creamy white and pink variegation. As the temperatures rise heading into summer the base color changes from dark red to green but the wonderful pink and cream variegation remain all summer. The fall color for 'Hana matoi' is also remarkable as the foliage changes to a bright cherry red that lights up in the landscape. ‘Chantilly Lace’ was found at Red Maple Nursery in 1949 and introduced by Billy Shwartz. This great Japanese maple with the Rock and Roll name has very finely cut leaves.  New growth appears red but very quickly changes to green from the center of the leaf out. This effect gives the plant almost a variegated appearance. By summer the foliage is light green almost chartreuse and contrasts greatly with other green maples that start yellow-green only to darken as summer approaches. Fall color is bright raspberry red. In spring, ‘Baldsmith’ has leaves that emerge much more of a deep red than the burgundy color of most "red" Japanese Maples. Soon after, most of the leaf turns green leaving just the margins a very attractive red. The red and green of the bi color leaf at this stage makes the overall tree appear almost orange and gives it a very distinctive appearance. In some climates this look lasts well into the summer but in hotter climates where some afternoon shade would be greatly appreciated, 'Baldsmith' fades to green as summer takes hold. Acer palmatum ‘Beni Shien’ is possibly the most unique maple introduced in the last fifty years. Harold Johnson of Tallahassee, Alabama introduced this wonderful variegated Japanese maple born of the south and then gave it a Japanese name that translates to red smoke. The deeply divided leaves emerge more purple than anything else, but will have cream markings starting at the base of the leaf and extending along the margins of most of the lobes. In summer the purple of spring will change to olive green in more shade or bronze in more sun. In late summer new red growth will pop out all over the plant. Fall color is usually orange or red. Acer palmatum ‘Manyo no sato’ is a wonderfully funky maple with the Japanese name that means "village of 10,000 leaves". ‘Manyo no sato’ is very similar to 'Beni shien'. In early spring the irregularly shaped leaves emerge cream and purple. Leaves become more purple and green with cream before the purple starts to fade in summer. While fairly sun tolerant this cultivar prefers some shade in hotter climates. In more sun the red colors become more prominent while in more shade the variegation becomes much more subtle. ‘Beni maiko’ means red dancing girl. Emerging foliage in spring is brilliant fire engine red turning pinkish before turning totally green by late May in Georgia. In spring it is hard to distinguish this cultivar from others like 'Shin de shojo' or 'Shishio Improved'. It probably does not hold its color as long as either of these cultivars but in summer after turning completely green it does something unique. The second season growth on mature plants will come out puckered. dark scarlet red with green veins and the lobes of the small odd leaves will sometimes be very strangely shaped. 'Beni maiko' has a very graceful habit, starting off as openly vase shaped when young becomig more round topped with age. Acer palmatum ‘Otome zakura’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples and is one of our favorites. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Otome zakura’ has some of the brightest red foliage you can imagine. This incredible red color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Otome zakura’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright red foliage of spring. This red new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. ‘Akin’s E.P.’ is a Japanese maple built for the south. Born in Louisiana, Acer palmatum ‘Akin’s E.P.’ is an excellent grower even in our extreme summer heat. ‘Akin’s E.P.’ has small, palmate leaves that emerge a deep red or maroon in the spring. The color of these leaves fades somewhat in the summer as all maples do in the heat, however ‘Akin’s E.P.’ will hold most of its spring color given a little afternoon shade.
