Acer palmatum 'Twombley's Red Sentinel' - mapleridgenursery Acer palmatum 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' Red Columnar Japanese Maple - Maple Ridge Nursery
Acer palmatum 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' Red Columnar Japanese Maple
from $49.00
Acer palmatum ‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’ is a Fast Growing Red Japanese Maple with a Compact and Columnar Growth Habit 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' grows with an extreme upright habit and very little lateral growth. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' grows narrow and compact becoming a dense shrub with a tall, upright shape. This tree eventually develops into a column like shape. The compact nature of 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' makes it a great upright Japanese maple for smaller and narrower areas of the garden. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' generally has larger broad, star shaped leaves with a rounded middle lobe. New leaves appear crimson red, then quickly darken to burgundy but as this plant almost always seems to be growing it has a two toned effect most of the year. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' holds some red color pretty much all summer even in hotter climates. Fall color is a spectacular bright red and the dark red stems of the last new growth even add interest to the winter landscape. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' can be grown in zones 5 through 9 and holds its color all year even in hot climates. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' can tolerate full sun in even the hottest climates. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' is an extremely hardy tree and will grow well in many different conditions. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' was an introduction discovered as a witches broom on a 'Bloodgood' by Ken Twombly of Twombly Nursery, Monroe Connecticut. Much more vigorous than most witches brooms, 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' quickly develops the upright columnar habit for which it has become famous but will widen some with age. Juniperus chinensis 'Shimpaku' - mapleridgenursery
Juniperus chinensis 'Shimpaku'
from $29.00 $35.00
Juniperus chinensis ‘Shimpaku’, commonly known as Shimpaku Juniper, is one of the most respected and widely grown Chinese junipers in cultivation. Valued for its refined foliage, rugged character, and long-term durability, Shimpaku is equally suited for bonsai training and landscape use, making it one of the most versatile evergreen conifers available. At Maple Ridge Nursery, Shimpaku is grown for strong root systems, balanced branching, and reliable performance across a wide range of climates. Growth Habit & Mature Size Shimpaku Juniper is a slow to moderate growing evergreen with a naturally irregular, layered habit. When planted in the landscape, it typically matures to 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, though size and form can be easily managed through pruning. Its flexible branching structure allows it to be shaped, trained, or maintained naturally, making it suitable for both formal garden designs and informal plantings. Foliage Characteristics Shimpaku features fine, scale-like foliage with a dense, compact texture and deep green color that holds year-round. Unlike many other junipers, established plants produce very little sharp juvenile growth, resulting in a softer appearance that is ideal for close viewing and detailed shaping. Bark & Seasonal Interest As it matures, Shimpaku develops naturally exfoliating bark, revealing layered tones of gray, tan, and reddish brown. This peeling bark adds age and character over time, enhancing its value as a specimen plant and contributing to its reputation as a premier bonsai variety. Sun, Soil & Water Requirements Sun Tolerance: Partial Sun Soil: Well-drained soil is essential Water: Moderate water; drought tolerant once established Shimpaku Juniper performs best in partial sun and in soils that drain freely. Shimpaku should never be planted in areas where water remains standing for extended periods. Cold Hardiness & Reliability Shimpaku is cold hardy to USDA Zone 5 and highly tolerant of heat, wind, and dry conditions. Once established, it is a low-maintenance evergreen with strong resistance to common juniper pests and diseases when grown in proper conditions. Landscape & Bonsai Uses Shimpaku is commonly used as premier bonsai material. It can be used as an accent plant in Japanese inspired gardens. Shimpaku is a good option for rock gardens, slopes, and raised beds. Shimpaku is a specimen evergreen great for year-round interest. Why Choose Shimpaku Juniper from Maple Ridge Nursery? Shimpaku Juniper offers a rare combination of refined appearance, toughness, and adaptability. Whether grown as a bonsai or planted in the landscape, it develops character with age and remains visually strong in every season. Our trees are carefully selected and grown to ensure healthy roots, true cultivar identity, and reliable establishment—so they arrive ready to thrive.

Healthy and good size.

Excellent size for a one gallon, dense foilage. Very happy with the graft and roots had filled out the container but not rootbound. Very pleased with the quality of the tree

Great prices

I'm always skeptical of ordering from nurseries, because I never know the quality of the plant that I will receive. The size of the tree from this nursery was in between the smallest and largest that I've had mailed before. I was very happy with the condition of the maple, and I will definitely order more. Great selection and price!
