Acer palmatum 'Inaba shidare' Weeping Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Inaba shidare’ weeping Japanese maple is one of the best lace leaf cultivars for hotter climates, it's name means "like the cascading leaves of the rice plant" and has been grown since at least the mid 1800s in Japan. The leaves in early spring are very dark purple and I have heard them described as almost black. As summer approaches they become more red, then turning bronze before being one of the last maples in our gardens to finally give in to the Georgia heat and turn green. Fall color is usually bright fiery red. Acer palmatum 'Inaba shidare' weeping Japanese maple is a great tree to add some color to a sunny garden.

Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' Dwarf Japanese Maple
from $39.00
'Red Dragon' will stay more red during summer than most varieties. The coarse leaves begin the spring dark purple and become more red as temperatures increase. By mid August in Georgia when summer temperatures reach their peak and most other red varieties have turned green 'Red Dragon' still has some bronze or slight bits of red left on it's leaves. Fall color is a dramatic crimson red. The growth habit of 'Red Dragon' is not as pendulous as other weeping cultivars, at times almost prostrate. While 'Red Dragon' will tolerate full sun in some climates, it would prefer a break from the sun at some point during the day in hotter areas. Although 'Red Dragon is reported to be a moderate grower in some climates, we find it to be very slow in the south. 10 Year Size Height: 3-5 Feet Width: 5-6 FeetSpring Color: RedSummer Color: RedFall Color: CrimsonSun Tolerance: PartialPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil

Acer palmatum 'Red Emperor' Red Japanese Maple
from $39.00
Acer palmatum ‘Red Emperor’ Japanese maple was originally introduced by Dick Wolff at Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania as Emperor 1 in 1976 and much later patented under that name by someone in Oregon. Many growers grow this plant as 'Red Emperor'. It does not matter what you call it, this is a great plant. It is one of many in a long line of trees to claim the title "Better Than Bloodgood" and in some ways it is. 'Red Emperor' Japanese maple does not burn in full sun in the Southeast, as to how well it holds it's color, we find that in some landscapes it does as well or better than other cultivars but in other situations it seems to turn green a little quicker. We have yet to determine what causes this. Either way, this tree will not disappoint you. Another advantage is that it usually leafs out a few days later than 'Bloodgood' in the spring lessening the chance of frost damage. The growth rate of 'Red Emperor' Japanese maple is very good, spring color is dark purple and fall color is bright red.
10 Year Size: Height: 15-18 Feet Width: 12-15 Feet

Summer Color: Burgundy
Fall Color: Red

Acer palmatum 'Fireglow' Red Upright Japanese Maple
from $39.00
'Fireglow' is the perfect name for this small upright Japanese maple introduced by Nurseries Gilardelli in Italy. The leaves emerge more dark red than purple in spring and are thinner than other cultivars making them somewhat translucent. If sited where it can be viewed with the rising or setting sun behind it the leaves will glow a bright red. If you are watching when the sun gets to the proper angle it looks like someone turned on an electrical switch and the tree was lit. Rather slow growing for an upright. Fall color is bright red. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 4-6 feetSpring Color: Dark RedSummer Color: RedFall Color: RedSun Tolerance: FullPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil

Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' Red Japanese Maple Tree
from $39.00
Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ Japanese maple tree is probably the most popular Japanese maple in the world and for good reason! Bloodgood is an excellent growing upright Japanese maple with a rich purple, burgundy color in the spring. This color fades a little in the summer but then turns to a bright, fiery red in the fall. Bloodgood is one of the larger growing Japanese maples and forms a very nice rounded canopy at maturity. Bloodgood can handle full sun in even the hottest climates. Any yard with enough space needs a 'Bloodgood' Japanese maple tree.

Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' Green Japanese Maple
from $39.00
Its claim to fame is that Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' is considered the only upright dissectum. This is technically correct but the dissected leaf is the only similarity between 'Seiryu' and other dissectums. Actually the leaves are so much smaller, that even the leaves do not have the appearance of other dissectums. That being said, here at Maple Ridge Nurseries we love the plant we affectionately call the "weed" because it is so easy to grow. Seiryu is a fast growing small tree that is mostly vase shaped when young growing wider and much rounder with age. The foliage appears green in spring with a slight red or pink tinge to the margins of each leaf. These margins quickly fade away leaving a very attractive medium green leaf for summer. Sometimes in late summer the colorful margins reappear, but this time a little more orange. Most literature describes the fall color as gold or yellow but I have never seen this except in photos from other parts of the world. In our climate the first cold air may give the tree an orange or red appearance but the leaves will always end up burgundy before dropping.

Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans Nana'
from $29.00
$35.00
Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans nana’ is tightly compact and tends to grow with clumps of foliage. The small cones are abundant and very attractive. The cones first appear in fall as a very light almost lime green that contrast to the dark green foliage making 'Elegans Nana' one of the most interesting plants in the Autumn garden. During winter the cones turn first gold, then brown and during colder winters in the south, the foliage will bronze sometimes taking on an almost purple cast. Then in spring you get the same effect as fall when the new growth emerges lime green against the dark older foliage. It will grow equally well in the full sun of Georgia or in very dark shade and provide interest all year long, making this one of the most versatile conifers and one of my favorites.10 year size: Height: 2-3 Feet Width: 1-2 FeetColor: GreenSun Tolerance: Full
