Acer palmatum ‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’ is a Fast Growing Red Japanese Maple with a Compact and Columnar Growth Habit
'Twombly's Red Sentinel' grows with an extreme upright habit and very little lateral growth. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' grows narrow and compact becoming a dense shrub with a tall, upright shape. This tree eventually develops into a column like shape. The compact nature of 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' makes it a great upright Japanese maple for smaller and narrower areas of the garden. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' generally has larger broad, star shaped leaves with a rounded middle lobe.
New leaves appear crimson red, then quickly darken to burgundy but as this plant almost always seems to be growing it has a two toned effect most of the year. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' holds some red color pretty much all summer even in hotter climates. Fall color is a spectacular bright red and the dark red stems of the last new growth even add interest to the winter landscape.

‘Germaine’s Gyration’ was discovered by Bob Vandermoss and introduced by Andre Iselli for his mother Germaine. This outstanding dissectum variety does well in the south, tolerating even full sun. This is important because most green dissectums will not tolerate full sun as far south as Atlanta. Germaine's Gyration will become much wider than tall with the inner branching swirling around the main trunk in different directions making it obvious where the gyration part of the name came from. The outer form of the tree however is a very pleasant and fairly symmetrical mound. Fall color begins in October as a golden yellow first turning orange then almost red as the temperatures cool in November.

Acer palmatum 'Strawberry Spring' is a striking new reticulated Japanese maple cultivar discovered as a seedling of Amber Ghost by breeder Talon Buchholz. It dazzles with rosy pink spring foliage heavily etched with deep green veins, gradually transforming through summer to creamy green and finally showcasing vibrant oranges and reds in the fall.
Fresh leaves emerge in spring a bright strawberry‑pink with dramatic dark green veining. 'Strawberry Spring' is considered among the prettiest spring displays of any maple. In the summer the pink fades to creamy white or light green, while new growth may retain pink highlights against green veins. Finally, foliage turns to warm orange-red with rusty tones in the fall. With so many color changes 'Strawberry Spring' offers a season‑long spectacle.

'Shojo nomura' means "beautiful red faced monkey" and this vivid image seems to fit this wonderful small tree. Decidedly upright, 'Shojo nomura' emerges dark purple almost black in early spring but later growth is decidely red and seems to be more red than purple most of the season. It holds its color in our gardens as long as any upright palmatum we grow and if it does fade to green in very hot years it never bronzes out like other red cultivars. Also it seems to hold it's color better in shade than most varieties.
