Acer shirasawanum ‘Mikado’ is a shorter growing full moon Japanese maple with large, rounded leaves. These leaves emerge in the spring with a striking plum red color. Acer palmatum 'Otome zakura' Corallinum Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Otome zakura’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples and is one of our favorites. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Otome zakura’ has some of the brightest red foliage you can imagine. This incredible red color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Otome zakura’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright red foliage of spring. This red new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Acer palmatum ‘Iijima sunago’ is an old cultivar from Japan that was first mentioned in the 19th century. ‘Iijima sunago’ is an upright Japanese maple with dark orangish-red leaves with pronounced green veins in the spring. ‘Iijima sunago’ translates to “sand dusted” which describes the white specks that the leaves of this tree develops during most summers. Acer palmatum ‘Monticello Gardens’ is a lace leaf Japanese maple with a weeping, sprawling habit. There are some red Japanese maples that hold their red color well in the summer and then there is ‘Monticello Gardens’. This tree stays red all the time. ‘Monticello Gardens’ is red in the spring, it is red in the summer and then it is, of course, red in the fall. Acer palmatum ‘Englishtown’ is an excellent, upright growing tree for tight spaces or smaller landscapes. ‘Englishtown’ is a dwarf Japanese maple that doesn’t typically have the same compact, shrubby habit of other dwarfs. ‘Englishtown’ will have a more tree like shape while remaining relatively small. ‘Englsihtown’ has dark red leaves in the spring that will usually keep their color very well into the summer. Acer palmatum 'Amagi shigure' Reticulated Japanese Maple

One of the most frustrating aspects of collecting Japanese Maples is nomenclature. This is compounded when different trees are introduced with the same name. There is a small green leafed dwarf with this name described by Vertrees before 1985. Since this tree was apparently introduced in 1987 according to Yano in his "Book for Maples", this name is illegitimate for this cultivar so we identify this plant as Amagi shigure "Japanese Selection"
All this is even more distressing because this is an outstanding cultivar. Starting in early spring with bright pink leaves the reticulation becomes more pronounced and the leaves become more red as spring progresses. In summer the leaves darken and become more purple while the prominent black veins remain. While more sun tolerant than other reticulated varieties this cultivar still appreciates some shade especially in hotter climates. Fall color is orange and spectacular.

Acer palmatum ‘Alpine Sunrise’ is a dwarf Japanese maple that emerges in spring with bright red foliage. Acer palmatum ‘Verkade’s Jacus Potus’ is among a rare category of Japanese maple called Sessilifolium. These Japanese maples are known for their thin, feather like leaves. ‘Verkade’s Jacus Potus’ has excellent colors on these unique leaves. The leaves emerge deep red in the spring. The leaves then turn to a yellowish green in the summer. Acer palmatum ‘Dark Ghost’ is the newest member of the “Ghost” series. ‘Dark Ghost’ is a reticulated Japanese maple just like the rest of the “Ghosts”. Unsurprisingly, ‘Dark Ghost’ has the darkest purple leaves of any of the other ghost varieties. ‘Dark Ghost’ is even a darker purple than ‘Purple Ghost’. ‘Dark Ghost’ also has a larger leaf than many of the other ghost varieties. Acer palmatum ‘Dark Ghost’ leafs out in the spring with a deep purple-red color with reticulated veining. This color holds pretty well into the summer even if the reticulation doesn’t. Fall color is a bright red.

Acer palmatum 'Chantilly Lace' Lace Leaf Japanese Maple

‘Chantilly Lace’ was found at Red Maple Nursery in 1949 and introduced by Billy Shwartz. This great Japanese maple with the Rock and Roll name has very finely cut leaves. New growth appears red but very quickly changes to green from the center of the leaf out. This effect gives the plant almost a variegated appearance. By summer the foliage is light green almost chartreuse and contrasts greatly with other green maples that start yellow-green only to darken as summer approaches. Fall color is bright raspberry red. 'Chantilly Lace' grows into an irregular mound, some pruning of unruly branches will add to its appeal.

Acer palmatum 'Noel' is a variegated Japanese maple from the corallinum category of Japanese maples. Like many corallinum type Japanese Maples 'Noel' is bright red in the early spring. 'Noel' might even have the brightest red spring color of any of the corallinum type Japanese maples. What makes 'Noel' even more unique is the splashes of pink variegation that show out across much of the foliage. This bright red with pink variegation gives 'Noel' one of the best spring displays of any Japanese maple. By summer the red leaves fade to an emerald green and maintain the splashes of pink. The leaves then turn bright red again for fall. This is a newer variety for us, but has quickly become one of our very favorite Japanese maples
