Acer palmatum 'Kawahara no midori' is a fast growing, upright Japanese maple with bright green leaves and bright green bark. You may be familiar with coral bark Japanese maples, but did you know there are also Japanese maples with green bark? Many Japanese maples have a greenish bark when they are young, but its a much more natural looking green. 'Kawahara no midori' has bright green bark that actually stands out in a crowd of other plants. The leaves of 'Kawahara no midori' are green in the spring and summer and turn bright yellow in the fall.

Acer palmatum ‘Iijima sunago’ is an old cultivar from Japan that was first mentioned in the 19th century. ‘Iijima sunago’ is an upright Japanese maple with dark orangish-red leaves with pronounced green veins in the spring. ‘Iijima sunago’ translates to “sand dusted” which describes the white specks that the leaves of this tree develops during most summers. Acer palmatum ‘Ryu sei’ is the most pendulous Japanese maple on the market today. The most unusual thing about this is that the leaves are fully palmate, light green and very attractively star shaped. Most cascading varieties have dissected leaves. If not staked, 'Ryu sei' becomes a ground cover. When grown in a container it can resemble ivy cascading down past the bottom of the pot. For the landscape 'Ryu sei' is generally staked up to a certain height then allowed to fall to the ground making a beautiful flowing mound. Fall color is gold and orange.

Acer palmatum 'Shojo nomura' Red Upright Japanese Maple

'Shojo nomura' means "beautiful red faced monkey" and this vivid image seems to fit this wonderful small tree. Decidedly upright, 'Shojo nomura' emerges dark purple almost black in early spring but later growth is decidely red and seems to be more red than purple most of the season. It holds its color in our gardens as long as any upright palmatum we grow and if it does fade to green in very hot years it never bronzes out like other red cultivars. Also it seems to hold it's color better in shade than most varieties. Brilliant effects can be obtained by planting this tree where its translucent leaves can be back lit by the morning or evening sun. Fall color is red and usually outstanding.

Acer palmatum 'Amagi shigure' Reticulated Japanese Maple

One of the most frustrating aspects of collecting Japanese Maples is nomenclature. This is compounded when different trees are introduced with the same name. There is a small green leafed dwarf with this name described by Vertrees before 1985. Since this tree was apparently introduced in 1987 according to Yano in his "Book for Maples", this name is illegitimate for this cultivar so we identify this plant as Amagi shigure "Japanese Selection"
All this is even more distressing because this is an outstanding cultivar. Starting in early spring with bright pink leaves the reticulation becomes more pronounced and the leaves become more red as spring progresses. In summer the leaves darken and become more purple while the prominent black veins remain. While more sun tolerant than other reticulated varieties this cultivar still appreciates some shade especially in hotter climates. Fall color is orange and spectacular.

Introduced by Masayoshi Yano in 1993 this exciting plant has become wildly sought after. 'Bihou translates to beautiful mountain range. Chartreuse new leaves appear edged in red before turning a more medium green for summer. Fall color is yellow sometimes blended with orange. The real interest happens in winter when the bark turns orange - yellow and glows. 'Bi hou' is an outstanding addition to the winter garden and can be paired with 'Sango kaku' or other similar trees to create a more dramatic effect. What makes 'Noel' even more unique is the splashes of pink variegation that show out across much of the foliage. This bright red with pink variegation gives 'Noel' one of the best spring displays of any Japanese maple. By summer the red leaves fade to an emerald green and maintain the splashes of pink. Acer palmatum 'Tsukubane' Green Japanese Maple

In early spring leaves emerge red with green center in sunny locations. In more shade the leaves are green with red tint on the lobes. Either way they are totally green in a matter of days. However, the reason to grow this tree is for the wonderful bright red fall color. 'Tsukubane' is fast growing and becomes a large round topped specimen with age. Older trees regularly achieve heights of more than 25 feet. The Japanese name means ridge on Mount Tsukuba.
