Acer palmatum ‘Gable’s Glory’ is a fascinating Japanese maple with some incredible color changes. ‘Gable’s Glory’ first emerges in the spring with bright red, broad leaves. This is a stunning color that persists through the spring. As the temperatures rise, ‘Gable’s Glory’ changes to a bronze-red color. The color of the leaves continues to get lighter until they are nearly yellow in the peak of summer. What is even more impressive than the bright summer color, is the new growth that this tree puts on late in the summer months. ‘Gable’s Glory’ will push out more of that bright red spring growth that appears on top of the yellow summer color. This makes for a remarkable contrast in color on the same tree. Fall color is then a nice orange to red.

Discovered by Ed "Skeeter" Rod in Pennsylvania this is a witches broom with the usual twiggy growth but a very vigorous upright habit. The small attractive leaves emerge bright red in spring before turning dark red in summer. This plant holds it's color very well even in hot climates. It also seems to hold color well in fairly heavy shade. Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' is the famous "Floating Cloud" maple. In early spring dazzling foliage opens speckled with pink and white. In summer the pink fades leaving only a dusting of white to hint at its former spring glory. Unfortunately in areas with hotter climates the variegation is not nearly as well developed and some years does not show at all. Oh the anticipation of a gardener in a hot climate hoping each spring that this will be the year that his prized "Floating Cloud" will actually show its colors. If you do actually get to see variegation in early spring in these hot locations it is fleeting at best as it will fade to green quickly leaving the gardener waiting and wanting until next spring. Compact and upright when young 'Ukigumo' matures into a beautiful small round topped tree. Fall color is generally orange.

Acer palmatum 'Japanese Princess' Dwarf Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Japanese Princess’ is one of the most exciting dwarf Japanese maples in existence right now. ‘Japanese Princess’ is from the Mikawa Yatsabusa family, meaning that it has short internodal lengths on the branches which creates a stacking effect of the leaves. ‘Japanese Princess’ emerges with a bright red color to the leaves. The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. By summer, the color of the leaves fades to a light green color. Fall color is a bright orange to red.

Starting in early spring with bright pink leaves the reticulation becomes more pronounced and the leaves become more red as spring progresses. In summer the leaves darken and become more purple while the prominent black veins remain. While more sun tolerant than other reticulated varieties this cultivar still appreciates some shade especially in hotter climates. Fall color is orange and spectacular.

Acer palmatum ‘Sekka yatsubusa’ has short internodal lengths that give this small plant a very different appearance as the leaves are bunched up along the stems. Red edges to the deeply divided leaves and red petioles add to the effect. All though very slow when young this small tree can grow quite vigorously under the right conditions. Once the tree gets a little older it begins to develop very interesting fasciations or flattened stems of congested growth. While like most maples 'Sekka yatsubusa' is happy in partial shade this adaptable cultivar does quite well in heavy shade or in full sun in all but the hottest climates. Fall color is usually red and very good, some years it can be quite stunning.

Born in Louisiana, Acer palmatum ‘Akin’s E.P.’ is an excellent grower even in our extreme summer heat. ‘Akin’s E.P.’ has small, palmate leaves that emerge a deep red or maroon in the spring. The color of these leaves fades somewhat in the summer as all maples do in the heat, however ‘Akin’s E.P.’ will hold most of its spring color given a little afternoon shade.
