Acer palmatum ‘Jerre Schwartz’ was introduced by Billy Schwartz, owner of Green Mansions Nursery in Pennsylvaniay. He named the unique cultivar for his mother Jerre. Acer palmatum ‘Jerre Schwartz’ has interestingly sharp toothed and deeply divided small leaves emerge cherry red in early spring before quickly becoming darker and more maroon and then bronze before turning totally green for summer. New cheery colored growth in summer provides a cool contrast to the older green foliage. Found as a witches broom the center lobes of some leaves will show the characteristic shortened middle lobe. Acer palmatum ‘Celebration’ is a Japanese maple with reticulated variegation. ‘Celebration’ may have the brightest pink color of any of the reticulated varieties. The bright pink leaves are contrasted by dark red veins. ‘Celebration’ will fade somewhat in the summer to a greenish color, but the reticulation still holds strong. There is often also a second push of new growth in the summer that displays the wonderful spring colors yet again on top of the more mature summer foliage. Fall color is red.

Acer palmatum 'Sister Ghost' emerges yellow with dark veins in early spring. Sometimes in early spring leaves have a slight pink cast. Developed by Koichiro Wada Nursery, Japan before 1938 'Butterfly' has striking variegation. Frequent pruning is recommended to thin inner branching as it gets older, in order to prevent it from becoming to congested. Fall color is orange. There does appear to be two different cultivars being sold under the name 'Butterfly', while they are similar there is enough difference to indicate that they are distinctively different cultivars. One has pink and yellow variegation in early spring while the other one is pink and creamy white. Later in the season the variegation in both appear white. Butterfly does better in partial shade and in warmer climates the pink fades as summer temperatures rise.

Acer palmatum 'Otome zakura' Corallinum Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Otome zakura’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples and is one of our favorites. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Otome zakura’ has some of the brightest red foliage you can imagine. This incredible red color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Otome zakura’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright red foliage of spring. This red new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Acer palmatum ‘Deshojo’ is a wonderful little tree known mostly for its excellent spring color. ‘Deshojo’ leafs out in spring with a bright coral red color to the leaves which is quite striking in any landscape. These showy leaves unfortunately don’t last very long however, turning a solid green in late spring that maintains throughout the summer. ‘Deshojo’ shows out again in the fall when the leaves transition back to a bright red. ‘Deshojo’ is a fairly small growing tree in the landscape and is a wonderful cultivar for bonsai.

Acer palmatum 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' Reticulated Japanese Maple (Pre-Order)

Acer palmatum ‘Aka shigitatsu sawa’ has amazing early spring variegation. Almost the entire leaf will be cream with undertones of red and dark green veins. The leaves will turn green in the summer but the veins will be darker. 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' will not tolerate afternoon sun in hot climates but should be placed where it can get 3-4 hours of morning sun because light is required to get the red tones to show up. This plant is slow to mature but will turn into a small round topped tree that will be almost as wide as tall.
