'Nuresagi' also known as, the 'Wet Heron' maple is very fast growing especially when young. Younger plants tend to put on vertical growth faster than most varieties we grow, sometimes running out 3-4 feet upright leaders in one season. Of course it does not grow at this rate every year. The long leaders will spend some time filling out before sending out more vertical growth. Very nice white striations also appear on the bark of older wood. The name 'Wet Heron' comes from the blue cast created by silver pubescence covering the deep red leaves when they emerge in spring. This reminded the Japanese of the 19th century, of a wet heron. 'Nuresagi' was listed in nursery catalogs as early as 1882.

'Moonfire' is one of our favorites. It seems to grow faster and hold it's color better in shade than other red leaf cultivars. 'Moonfire' also tolerates full sun and maintains it's color into the hot Georgia summer as well as any upright variety we grow. The foliage of 'Moonfire' comes out dark purple in spring but tends to turn more red as summer nears, except in more shady locations where the color remains more purple. It's leaves are slightly translucent and tend to glow when the sun lights them from behind. Fall color is bright fiery red. 'Moonfire' was discovered by Dick Wolff in 1974.

‘Shaina’ was discovered as a witches broom on a 100-year-old atropurpureum by Dick Wolf of Red Maple Nurseries in the early 1980's, this compact dwarf maple has become a favorite of maple enthusiasts and gardeners all over the world. Very upright when young 'Shaina' begins to widen with age. I have grown this wonderful little cultivar in full sun even in Decatur, GA although like most Japanese maples it would appreciate some break from the sun during the day in hotter climates. Leaves appear nice red in the spring, a true red and not the purple of some cultivars. Though reported to hold its color all summer long in some parts of the world, by mid summer in our climate leaves turn bronze or green but then new red growth appears at the branch tips. Fall color is a very attractive bright red.

In early spring the palmate leaves emerge pinkish red with green veins giving the entire round topped small tree a stately appearance. Acer palmatum ‘Hime Shojo’ is an awesome little Japanese maple discovered in Japan before 1994 that is a really exciting addition to the U.S. market. While the new growth is a very bright almost cherry red the small deeply divided leaves soon harden off to the classic dark maroon that the Japanese refer to as shojo. This continues much of the summer, although a relatively small plant, 'Hime shojo' seems to put on bright red new growth much of the year. This dense little shrubby tree holds its color very well long into the summer and even all summer long in cooler parts of its range. Although the best colors are achieved in full sun, and it will tolerate full sun in most areas, a little shade at some part of the day is appreciated in hotter climates. Fall color is a bright cherry red and better than many small cultivars.
