The creamy white center of the leaf and bright green veining make this one of the best reticulated leaves of any Japanese maple. ‘Firefly’ has an upright growth habit, forming a small to medium size tree at maturity.

Acer palmatum 'Fireglow' is the perfect name for this small upright Japanese maple introduced by Nurseries Gilardelli in Italy. The large, broad leaves emerge more dark red than purple in spring and are thinner than other cultivars making them somewhat translucent. If sited where it can be viewed with the rising or setting sun behind it the leaves will glow a bright red. If you are watching when the sun gets to the proper angle it looks like someone turned on an electrical switch and the tree was lit. Fall color is constantly bright red.
'Fireglow' is a moderate growing upright Japanese maple. 'Fireglow' will grow close to a foot per year eventually reaching 10 to 12 feet tall. 'Fireglow' will grow with a vase-shape structure with the canopy spreading out about 4 to 6 feet wide.

Acer palmatum ‘Fukinagashi’ is a delicate little linearlobum that may be the most unique Japanese maple in the category. The leaves of ‘Fukinagashi’ emerge in spring dark burgundy, almost black. ‘Fukinagashi’ also has some of the smallest and finest leaves of any linearlobum, which makes it a very interesting tree in the spring. However, unlike most Japanese maples, ‘Fukinagashi’ may be as interesting in the summer as it is in spring. By summertime, the leaves of ‘Fukinagashi’ turns a bright green. 'Garnet' is one of our favorite red lace leaf varieties for warmer climates. 'Garnet' is a weeping dwarf Japanese maple that can handle full sun even in these warmer areas. Acer palmatum 'Garnet' does a great job of holding its red color in full sun despite warmer temperatures. 'Garnet' doesn't just grow well in warm climates though as it will grow very well in zones 5 through 10.

While the new growth is a very bright almost cherry red the small deeply divided leaves soon harden off to the classic dark maroon that the Japanese refer to as shojo. This continues much of the summer, although a relatively small plant, 'Hime shojo' seems to put on bright red new growth much of the year. This dense little shrubby tree holds its color very well long into the summer and even all summer long in cooler parts of its range. Although the best colors are achieved in full sun, and it will tolerate full sun in most areas, a little shade at some part of the day is appreciated in hotter climates.
