Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer. This tree shows out once again in the fall with bright red foliage. ‘Dixie Spirit’ can handle full sun even in Georgia with minimal leaf burn. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Dr. Brown’ is a gorgeous tree with a name that doesn’t do it justice. ‘Dr. Brown’ leafs out with peach, pink, maroon, and green tones to the delicate foliage that give this tree outstanding spring color. Acer palmatum ‘Dragon Tears’ is a semi-pendulous tree that grows more out rather than up or down. ‘Dragon Tears’ will get some height, but its growth habit will result in a tree that is at least as wide as it is tall. ‘Dragon Tears’ has small, deeply divided, broad leaves. These leaves have a nice, deep burgundy color in the spring. The leaves will fade somewhat in the summer, but should always maintain at least a hint of burgundy. The the fall, ‘Dragon Tears’ displays a nice orange-red fall color that will put on a show.

‘Elizabeth’ is another great little witches broom discovered by Ed "Skeeter" Rod and named for his wife Elizabeth, this small tree should have a place in every garden. Although fast growing when young this plant slows down when older staying very compact. New growth is bright red and very vivid. Older foliage is more maroon. Acer palmatum ‘English Lace’ is one of the very few lace leaf varieties that have an upright habit. While not as decidedly upright as ‘Seiryu’, ‘English Lace’ will still form a nice tree that is large for a Dissectum. Acer palmatum ‘English Lace’ leafs out in spring with red foliage that becomes burgundy later in spring. Acer palmatum ‘Englishtown’ is an excellent, upright growing tree for tight spaces or smaller landscapes. ‘Englishtown’ is a dwarf Japanese maple that doesn’t typically have the same compact, shrubby habit of other dwarfs. ‘Englishtown’ will have a more tree like shape while remaining relatively small. ‘Englsihtown’ has dark red leaves in the spring that will usually keep their color very well into the summer. Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ has very fine linearilobum foliage and a small compact growth habit. More gardeners should find a spot for 'Enkan' in the garden. In spring foliage emerges a deep wine color and holds its red into the summer very well. Fall color ranges from orange red to deep red. Some palmate leaves appear on new growth but older foliage is quite narrow. It is very interesting the way leaves seem to hang downward from the petioles.
