Acer palmatum ‘Dai’ is a newer Japanese maple from Korea with an exceptional weeping habit. The leaves of ‘Dai’ are quite fine compared to other similar lace leaf Japanese maples. ‘Dai’ emerges in spring with a bright red color to the foliage with pink and orange undertones. ‘Dai’ then turns green by summer. ‘Dai’ then shows out again in the fall with an array of fiery reds and oranges. ‘Dai’ is a small growing Japanese maple with a strong weeping habit. Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer. Acer palmatum ‘Dragon Tears’ is a semi-pendulous tree that grows more out rather than up or down. ‘Dragon Tears’ will get some height, but its growth habit will result in a tree that is at least as wide as it is tall. ‘Dragon Tears’ has small, deeply divided, broad leaves. These leaves have a nice, deep burgundy color in the spring. The leaves will fade somewhat in the summer, but should always maintain at least a hint of burgundy. The the fall, ‘Dragon Tears’ displays a nice orange-red fall color that will put on a show.

Acer palmatum ‘Emma’ is a wonderful little lace leaf Japanese maple with excellent color. ‘Emma’ leafs out in the spring with orange-red leaves that are very showy. The exciting bright red foliage of early spring lasts well into the summer even in hot climates. Acer palmatum ‘Fukinagashi’ is a delicate little linearlobum that may be the most unique Japanese maple in the category. The leaves of ‘Fukinagashi’ emerge in spring dark burgundy, almost black. ‘Fukinagashi’ also has some of the smallest and finest leaves of any linearlobum, which makes it a very interesting tree in the spring. However, unlike most Japanese maples, ‘Fukinagashi’ may be as interesting in the summer as it is in spring. By summertime, the leaves of ‘Fukinagashi’ turns a bright green. The bark of ‘Fukinagashi’ is also a dark almost black color. This contrasts excellently off the bright green leaves, making the leaves appear even brighter. Everyone is always looking for a 'Bloodgood' type tree that will tolerate sun and heat in hotter climates and stay red all summer long. 'Heffner's Red Select' is definitely better than 'Bloodgood' but as to whether or not this is the holy grail, the jury is still out. Either way this is a nice small round topped tree. Emerging bright red in spring, the foliage quickly turns a very dark burgundy. The dark color should hold well through summer in all but the hottest climates.
