Acer palmatum ‘Iijima sunago’ is an old cultivar from Japan that was first mentioned in the 19th century. ‘Iijima sunago’ is an upright Japanese maple with dark orangish-red leaves with pronounced green veins in the spring. ‘Iijima sunago’ translates to “sand dusted” which describes the white specks that the leaves of this tree develops during most summers. Acer palmatum ‘Inaba shidare’ weeping Japanese maple is one of the best lace leaf cultivars for hotter climates, it's name means "like the cascading leaves of the rice plant" and has been grown since at least the mid 1800s in Japan. The leaves in early spring are very dark purple and I have heard them described as almost black. As summer approaches they become more red, then turning bronze before being one of the last maples in our gardens to finally give in to the Georgia heat and turn green. Fall color is usually bright fiery red. Acer palmatum 'Inaba shidare' weeping Japanese maple is a great tree to add some color to a sunny garden.

A very vigorous grower this maple has been around in Japan at least since 1882. With a name that means thunder 'Inazuma' really makes a statement in the garden as older trees can reach 25 feet or more in height and usually as wide or wider than tall. Acer palmatum ‘Japanese Princess’ is one of the most exciting dwarf Japanese maples in existence right now. ‘Japanese Princess’ is from the Mikawa Yatsabusa family, meaning that it has short internodal lengths on the branches which creates a stacking effect of the leaves. ‘Japanese Princess’ emerges with a bright red color to the leaves. The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. By summer, the color of the leaves fades to a light green color. Fall color is a bright orange to red.

Acer palmatum ‘Jerre Schwartz’ was introduced by Billy Schwartz, owner of Green Mansions Nursery in Pennsylvaniay. He named the unique cultivar for his mother Jerre. Acer palmatum ‘Jerre Schwartz’ has interestingly sharp toothed and deeply divided small leaves emerge cherry red in early spring before quickly becoming darker and more maroon and then bronze before turning totally green for summer. New cheery colored growth in summer provides a cool contrast to the older green foliage. Found as a witches broom the center lobes of some leaves will show the characteristic shortened middle lobe.
