Acer palmatum 'Mikawa Yatsubusa' is the Most Interested Dwarf Japanese Maple in Existence
Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is one of the most cool and unique dwarf Japanese maple varieties in existence. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is slow growing with closely arranged leaves that create a wonderful stubby upright tree. The defining characteristic of 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is the short inter nodal lengths and closely growing buds that create a stacked shingle like appearance of the leaves.
'Mikawa yatsubusa' has broad leaves that lay flat and close together. The leaf color of this interested dwarf Japanese maple tree is bright green in the spring. The green color darkens in the summer and in the shade. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' has incredible fall color ranging from orange to red. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' puts on quite a show in the fall for a dwarf Japanese maple.
While it may be slow growing, 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is still a very hardy tree and can be grown in climates all over the United States. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' can be comfortably grown in zones 5 through 9. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' can be grown in full sun in most climates. In the hottest locations 'Mikawa yatsubusa' would prefer some afternoon shade at the very least. However, 'Mikawa yatsubusa' does not require much sun and can be grown in shade in pretty much all climates.
This great little plant was found in the 1970s in the Tōkai region of Japan and named after the old Mikawa province there. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' has become known as one of the most interesting Japanese maples in existence and now has a multitude of other Japanese maple varieties that have been created from its seeds.

Acer palmatum ‘Mikazuki’ is an outstanding Japanese maple with reticulated variegation. ‘Mikazuki’ emerges in spring with bright pink color that is rivaled by only a few Japanese maples. ‘Mikazuki’ has very thin leaves and jagged edges that are very reminiscent of many of the “ghost” varieties. The leaves of ‘Mikazuki’ turn green in the summer while maintaining that reticulated variegation and prominent veining. 'Moonfire' is one of our favorites. It seems to grow faster and hold it's color better in shade than other red leaf cultivars. 'Moonfire' also tolerates full sun and maintains it's color into the hot Georgia summer as well as any upright variety we grow. The foliage of 'Moonfire' comes out dark purple in spring but tends to turn more red as summer nears, except in more shady locations where the color remains more purple. In early spring the palmate leaves emerge pinkish red with green veins giving the entire round topped small tree a stately appearance. As spring progresses the leaves change from that pink cast to bright red, then orange red all the time putting on a show. 'Nuresagi' also known as, the 'Wet Heron' maple is very fast growing especially when young. Younger plants tend to put on vertical growth faster than most varieties we grow, sometimes running out 3-4 feet upright leaders in one season. Of course it does not grow at this rate every year. The long leaders will spend some time filling out before sending out more vertical growth. Very nice white striations also appear on the bark of older wood. The name 'Wet Heron' comes from the blue cast created by silver pubescence covering the deep red leaves when they emerge in spring. This reminded the Japanese of the 19th century, of a wet heron. 'Nuresagi' was listed in nursery catalogs as early as 1882.

Acer palmatum 'Omure yama' Green Japanese Maple

When young, Acer palmatum 'Omure yama' may develop a leader and grow up, but as the tree reaches maturity the long slender new growth cascades down, giving the tree the weeping look that it is known for. Some growers stake 'Omure yama' when young to help it attain initial height from which to weep from. Plants that never develop a leader become wide weeping mounds not much different than the growth habit of many dissectums. I have heard other authors claim that this or that variety has the best fall color of any Japanese maple. Acer palmatum ‘Orange Dream’ is one of the first trees to announce that spring is here and does so with eye popping color. The yellow, orange and red of early spring turns first more yellow then to a subtle green for summer. In hotter climates this cultivar should be sited in partial shade, In cooler climates the orange lasts much longer into the summer. Fall color is bright orange or sometimes red. This cultivar was first selected at Fratelli Gilardelli Nursery in Italy in the late 1980s.
