Acer palmatum 'Mon zukushi' is a fantastic Japanese maple that has large green leaves in the spring and summer. These leaves then turn to a bright orange-red in the fall. 'Mon zukushi' has a sturdy branch structure and develops into a beautifully shaped tree at maturity.

'Moonfire' is one of our favorites. It seems to grow faster and hold it's color better in shade than other red leaf cultivars. 'Moonfire' also tolerates full sun and maintains it's color into the hot Georgia summer as well as any upright variety we grow. The foliage of 'Moonfire' comes out dark purple in spring but tends to turn more red as summer nears, except in more shady locations where the color remains more purple. It's leaves are slightly translucent and tend to glow when the sun lights them from behind. Fall color is bright fiery red. 'Moonfire' was discovered by Dick Wolff in 1974.

In early spring the palmate leaves emerge pinkish red with green veins giving the entire round topped small tree a stately appearance. As spring progresses the leaves change from that pink cast to bright red, then orange red all the time putting on a show. In cooler climates the colors last well into the summer before eventually turning first bronze and then green this happens quite early if you live in a hotter climate. In fall the show begins again with wonderful shades of red, orange and sometimes even yellow. The name comes from the Muro river in Japan.

Listed in 1710 in Japan this old cultivar is a Japanese Favorite. The brilliant red of early spring quickly becomes a rich purple. Holding its color in to the summer even in hot climates this tree is also said to be very hardy in cooler areas. This is a fast growing upright maple with older specimens reaching 25 feet or more becoming more round topped with age. Fall brings on special appreciation as Musashino takes on a life of it on with brilliant cherry red color.

'Nuresagi' also known as, the 'Wet Heron' maple is very fast growing especially when young. Younger plants tend to put on vertical growth faster than most varieties we grow, sometimes running out 3-4 feet upright leaders in one season. Of course it does not grow at this rate every year. The long leaders will spend some time filling out before sending out more vertical growth. Very nice white striations also appear on the bark of older wood. The name 'Wet Heron' comes from the blue cast created by silver pubescence covering the deep red leaves when they emerge in spring. This reminded the Japanese of the 19th century, of a wet heron. 'Nuresagi' was listed in nursery catalogs as early as 1882.

Acer palmatum 'Okushimo' Green Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Okushimo' was listed as early as 1710 in Japan. This old cultivar with a name that means pepper and salt, definitely has a place in the modern landscape. Leaves emerge chartreuse in spring with bright red petioles, before turning darker green and displaying cool little dimples all over the leaves. Its these dimples that reminded the Japanese of salt and pepper. Summer turns the leaves much darker and they begin to curl inward at the edges of the little sharp lobes. The distinctive green curled leaves of 'Okushimo' give it an ability to contrast just right with other plants in the garden and the fact that it is so decidedly vase shaped with most of its width above head height means that it can be tucked into corners and between paths or next to sidewalks. We do suggest that you plant 'Okushimo' in partial shade in hotter climates. The great fall color ranges from yellow to orange and even red.

Acer palmatum 'Omure yama' Green Japanese Maple

When young, Acer palmatum 'Omure yama' may develop a leader and grow up, but as the tree reaches maturity the long slender new growth cascades down, giving the tree the weeping look that it is known for. Some growers stake 'Omure yama' when young to help it attain initial height from which to weep from. Plants that never develop a leader become wide weeping mounds not much different than the growth habit of many dissectums. I have heard other authors claim that this or that variety has the best fall color of any Japanese maple. Acer palmatum 'Orange Flame' is a Japanese maple with fantastic fall color. 'Orange Flame' has narrow leaves with deeply divided lobes which gives it a different texture than the majority of upright growing Japanese maples. These leaves emerge in the spring with a green and bronze color that matures to a solid green color later in the spring. Fall is when 'Orange Flame' puts on a show. 'Orange Flame' will have bright fiery orange color which can be outstanding in the yard.

Acer palmatum 'Oregon Sunset' is a unique variety of Japanese maple in that it has broad leaves but grows as much laterally as it does upright. The leaves then turn bright red in the fall.

Acer palmatum ‘Orion’ is another great plant from Dick Wolff of Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania, The very small deeply divided foliage appears bright cherry red in early spring. As the leaves age they become maroon, copper and olive green and much larger. This little tree always seems to have new growth at the tips with little bursts of red sitting at the branch ends creating an explosion of color like a miniature fireworks display in the garden. Acer palmatum ‘Otome zakura’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples and is one of our favorites. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Otome zakura’ has some of the brightest red foliage you can imagine. This incredible red color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Otome zakura’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright red foliage of spring. This red new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Fall color is a pastel yellow to orange and very nice. This splendid cultivar was discovered as a seedling in 1980 at Yamina Rare Plants in Australia
