Acer Palmatum 'Red Emperor' is a Must Have Red Japanese Maple Tree for Any Yard
Acer palmatum ‘Red Emperor’ is a red Japanese maple tree was originally introduced by Dick Wolff at Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania as Emperor 1 in 1976 and much later patented under that name by someone in Oregon. Many growers grow this plant as 'Red Emperor'. It does not matter what you call it, this is a great plant.
'Red Emperor' is one of many in a long line of trees to claim the title "Better Than Bloodgood" and in some ways it is. 'Red Emperor' is rare in that it doesn't usually burn in full sun even in hotter climates. 'Red Emperor' holds its color through the summer better than most other red Japanese maple trees like 'Bloodgood'. This tree does not disappoint. Another advantage is that it usually leafs out in the spring a few days later than other red Japanese maple trees like 'Bloodgood' lessening the chance of frost damage. 'Red Emperor' is hardy in zones 4 through 10 and can handle full sun in pretty much any climate.
The growth rate of 'Red Emperor' Japanese maple is very good. 'Red Emperor' develops into a large red Japanese maple tree with a large, full canopy. 'Red Emperor' can grow to be about 15 to 18 feet tall and about 12-14 feet wide at the canopy.
'Red Emperor' has large, broad leaves that are dark red to purple in the spring. This dark red color holds well into the summer before eventually fading to a greenish color in the summer. The fall color of 'Red Emperor' is a stunning bright red.

Acer palmatum 'Rhode Island Red' is a dwarf Japanese maple with much larger leaves than is typical of a dwarf Japanese maple. The leaves of 'Rhode Island Red' are very similar to popular varieties such as 'Bloodgood' and 'Red Emperor'. 'Rhode Island Red' has broad leaves that emerge bright red in spring before darkening to a burgundy color for most of the spring. The color of 'Rhode Island Red' will fade slightly in the summer as most red Japanese maples do. The leaves then turn bright red in the fall. 'Rhode Island Red' has a short, compact habit that is very unique compared to most Japanese maples.

'Rikuzen shidare' has a weeping habit and grows similarly to Ryu sei. It will only grow as tall as it is staked and will weep down to the ground from there. Acer palmatum ‘Ryusei’ is a weeping dwarf Japanese maple with the most pendulous Japanese maple on the market today. 'Ryusei' basically grows straight down with a dramatic weeping growth habit. With this extreme growth habit 'Ryusei' won't achieve much height at all without staking. The natural growth of 'Ryusei' will create a mounding ground cover on its own. When grown in a container it can resemble ivy cascading down past the bottom of the pot. For the landscape 'Ryu sei' is generally staked up to a certain height then allowed to fall to the ground making a beautiful flowing waterfall like affect.
The most unusual thing about 'Ryusei' is that it has this extreme weeping growth habit but is the leaves are fully palmate instead of the traditionally lacy leaves of most weeping Japanese maples. The leaves of 'Ryusei' are light green and very attractively star shaped. Most cascading varieties have dissected leaves which makes 'Ryusei' one of the most unique varieties of weeping dwarf Japanese maples there is. The green leaf color is bright green in the spring and darkens somewhat in the summer. These leaves are stunning in the fall as they turn a bright orange that appears to glow in the landscape.
