Acer palmatum ‘Kurenai Jishi’ is often referred to as the red lion’s head maple. ‘Kurenai jishi’ leafs out bright red in the spring with some of the most unique foliage you will ever see on a Japanese maple. The leaves are curled up, crinkled, and close to the branch similar to ‘Shishigashira’. The foliage on ‘Kurenai jishi’ turns from bright red to burgundy to green from spring to summer. Acer palmatum 'Lightning' is a red Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves. The leaves of 'Lightning' are red to purple in the spring and turn to a greenish color in the summer. The leaves then turn bright yellow in the fall which is where it gets its name! 'Lightning' has a somewhat dense and shrubby habit. The leaf shape and structure of 'Lightning' give it contrast and differentiation from other red Japanese maple varieties. Acer palmatum 'Little Red' the Red Upright Growing Compact Dwarf Japanese Maple Acer palmatum 'Little Red' is a compact dwarf Japanese maple with an upright growth habit. 'Little Red' will grow very similarly to 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' but will stay shorter only getting to about 6 feet tall at maturity. 'Little Red' will grow with a very dense and compact growth habit that will develop in a shape like a short column. Acer palmatum ‘Mahogany’ is a fantastic, red upright Japanese maple. Brilliant deep red leaves emerge on ‘Mahogany’ in the spring. ‘Mahogany’ then holds varying shades of red all year long, often developing a rusty red color in the summer. Acer palmatum 'Mikawa Yatsubusa' is the Most Interested Dwarf Japanese Maple in Existence Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is one of the most cool and unique dwarf Japanese maple varieties in existence. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is slow growing with closely arranged leaves that create a wonderful stubby upright tree. The defining characteristic of 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is the short inter nodal lengths and closely growing buds that create a stacked shingle like appearance of the leaves. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' has broad leaves that lay flat and close together. The leaf color of this interested dwarf Japanese maple tree is bright green in the spring. The green color darkens in the summer and in the shade. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' has incredible fall color ranging from orange to red. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' puts on quite a show in the fall for a dwarf Japanese maple. While it may be slow growing, 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is still a very hardy tree and can be grown in climates all over the United States. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' can be comfortably grown in zones 5 through 9. Acer palmatum ‘Mikazuki’ is an outstanding Japanese maple with reticulated variegation. ‘Mikazuki’ emerges in spring with bright pink color that is rivaled by only a few Japanese maples. ‘Mikazuki’ has very thin leaves and jagged edges that are very reminiscent of many of the “ghost” varieties. The leaves of ‘Mikazuki’ turn green in the summer while maintaining that reticulated variegation and prominent veining. By fall, these leaves then change to a yellow color which is always interesting on a predominantly red tree. Acer palmatum 'Mimaye' is an upright growing Japanese maple with attractive green foliage. The leaves of 'Mimaye' are rather small and have a somewhat rounded dhape. These leaves appear bright green in the spring before darkening somewhat by summer time. In the fall 'Mimaye' displays a blast of color with leaves that turn from vibrant orange to deep red. Acer palmatum 'Momenshide' is a green Japanese maple with a feathery sessilifolium shape to the leaves. This is a very unusual leaf shape among Japanese maples. 'Momenshide' will grow to be about eight feet tall and six feet wide. 'Momenshide' will be green spring and summer and orange in the fall. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 4-6 feet

In early spring the palmate leaves emerge pinkish red with green veins giving the entire round topped small tree a stately appearance. As spring progresses the leaves change from that pink cast to bright red, then orange red all the time putting on a show. In cooler climates the colors last well into the summer before eventually turning first bronze and then green this happens quite early if you live in a hotter climate. Acer palmatum ‘Nicholsonii’ is a beautiful green Japanese maple with long, serrated leaves. Red samaras are commonly found on ‘Nicholsonii’ which contrasts wonderfully with the green leaves. 'Nuresagi' also known as, the 'Wet Heron' maple is very fast growing especially when young. Younger plants tend to put on vertical growth faster than most varieties we grow, sometimes running out 3-4 feet upright leaders in one season. Of course it does not grow at this rate every year. The long leaders will spend some time filling out before sending out more vertical growth. Very nice white striations also appear on the bark of older wood. The name 'Wet Heron' comes from the blue cast created by silver pubescence covering the deep red leaves when they emerge in spring. This reminded the Japanese of  the 19th century, of a wet heron.
