'Bloodgood' is an excellent growing upright Japanese maple that will develop a large canopy at maturity. Acer palmatum 'Bonfire' Corallinum Japanese Maple

The first 4-6 weeks of spring there are very few Japanese Maples that can compete with the brilliant crimson red color of 'Bonfire' foliage. Unfortunately the spring color is short lived and turns first bronze and then green as summer nears. The growth habit is short and stocky, almost as wide as tall. Fall color in the south is usually bright red sometimes leaning toward orange-red. There seems to be some confusion with the similarity between 'Bonfire', 'Akaji nishiki' and 'Seigai'. It seems that these are three different plants, 'Bonfire' and 'Akaji Nishiki' leaves are practically the same but 'Bonfire' is shorter and denser. Acer palmatum ‘Brocade’ is an exceptional laceleaf Japanese maple, prized for its dramatic weeping habit and ever-changing foliage color. In spring, new growth emerges a brilliant orange-red, gradually deepening to rich dark red before softening into red-green tones for summer. Fresh flushes of orange-red new growth continue to appear through the season, adding layers of color and texture.
In autumn, ‘Brocade’ truly lives up to its name, turning glowing shades of bright orange infused with red—often showing even stronger orange fall color than the popular ‘Orangeola,’ though ‘Brocade’ was introduced earlier.
One of the defining characteristics of ‘Brocade’ is its intensely cascading habit. This is one of the most strongly weeping laceleaf varieties available—so much so that, left unstaked, it will creep and flow across the ground, forming a low, spreading mound. Over ten years it typically reaches 1–1.5 feet tall and about 6 feet wide, creating a beautiful carpet of fine, lacy foliage. For a more architectural look, stake ‘Brocade’ to 3–4 feet and allow the branches to cascade downward in dramatic layers.
This variety combines spectacular color with a uniquely strong weeping form, making it a standout focal point in rock gardens, near water features, or in the foreground of mixed plantings.
Acer palmatum 'Burgundy Lace' Japanese Maple

This Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves, Introduced by Vermeulen & Son Nursery in New Jersey, in 1958 has very dark purple foliage in spring and holds its color well into the summer even in hotter climates. But like most cultivars the heat will eventually turn the leaves first bronze and then to dark green. Some shading is recommended in hot climates. Probably the most outstanding feature of 'Burgundy Lace' is its mature shape, which will be much wider than tall. Also very attractive is the way in which the red petioles contrast with the purple foliage in spring. Fall color is bright red.

Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' Variegated Japanese Maple

Developed by Koichiro Wada Nursery, Japan before 1938 'Butterfly' has striking variegation. Frequent pruning is recommended to thin inner branching as it gets older, in order to prevent it from becoming to congested. Fall color is orange. There does appear to be two different cultivars being sold under the name 'Butterfly', while they are similar there is enough difference to indicate that they are distinctively different cultivars. One has pink and yellow variegation in early spring while the other one is pink and creamy white. Later in the season the variegation in both appear white. Butterfly does better in partial shade and in warmer climates the pink fades as summer temperatures rise.

Acer palmatum 'Cecilia' is a red Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves. 'Cecilia' was found as a chance seedling from 'Tamukeyama' and shares many of the color characteristics with its parent plant. The leaves of 'Cecilia' are dark red becoming bright red in the fall. The dark red color and leaf shape of 'Cecilia' give it contrast and differentiation from other red Japanese maple varieties. 'Cecilia' should grow well and hold its color even in hotter sunnier climates. 'Cecilia' is a moderately growing upright Japanese maple that should mature into a very attractive small to medium sized tree perfect for nearly any yard.

Acer palmatum ‘Celebration’ is a Japanese maple with reticulated variegation. ‘Celebration’ may have the brightest pink color of any of the reticulated varieties. The bright pink leaves are contrasted by dark red veins. ‘Celebration’ will fade somewhat in the summer to a greenish color, but the reticulation still holds strong. There is often also a second push of new growth in the summer that displays the wonderful spring colors yet again on top of the more mature summer foliage. Fall color is red.

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. The original, a red clone from Japan dating back to the list of 1882 and this one, a green clone, named at Ex bury gardens in England around 1990. The name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Since this tree has no legitimate claim to the name being second, we refer to it as Chitose yama "Ex bury form". All that aside, this is a wonderful tree. Good enough to win the Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merritt in 1993. In early spring the leaves emerge a distinctive pale green with red tips covered with a white pubescence. If this weren't striking enough the entire tree is usually covered with an abundance of beautiful little red blooms. As temperatures warm and summer approaches the heavily textured leaves turn olive green complimented by the now ripe red samaras adorning the tree. As if all this were not enough, the real show starts in fall when this form of Chitose yama turns a traffic stopping bright red that literally glows. These trees are not displaying their usual characteristics, but they are still great looking Japanese maples. In my experience reverted trees still display typical fall colors regardless of the shape of the leaves. These trees are also not guaranteed to never regain their distinguishing characteristics, but they aren't currently showing it so it has to be noted.
