Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. The original, a red clone from Japan dating back to the list of 1882 and this one, a green clone, named at Ex bury gardens in England around 1990. The name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Since this tree has no legitimate claim to the name being second, we refer to it as Chitose yama "Ex bury form". All that aside, this is a wonderful tree. Good enough to win the Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merritt in 1993. In early spring the leaves emerge a distinctive pale green with red tips covered with a white pubescence. If this weren't striking enough the entire tree is usually covered with an abundance of beautiful little red blooms. As temperatures warm and summer approaches the heavily textured leaves turn olive green complimented by the now ripe red samaras adorning the tree. As if all this were not enough, the real show starts in fall when this form of Chitose yama turns a traffic stopping bright red that literally glows. Acer Palmatum 'Crimson Queen' is One of the Most Popular Red Dwarf Japanese Maples
Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' is a beautiful dwarf Japanese maple that has become one of the most famous Japanese maple varieties in existence. Introduced in 1965 ‘Crimson Queen’ has become the standard by which all red, lace leaf Japanese maples are judged and probably the most common dissectum grown in America.
'Crimson Queen' is one of the very best dwarf Japanese maple varieties. Its color, when in prime leaf, is unsurpassed. 'Crimson Queen' leafs out early in spring with a lighter red color that darkens as spring progresses. 'Crimson Queen' will tolerate full sun, even in hot climates but it is much happier if it can be provided with a few hours shade during the day or indirect light. Under perfect conditions Crimson Queen can hold its red color as well or better than most cultivars. In hotter climates 'Crimson Queen' will lose its red color in the summer with the leaves turning a greenish color with a bronze hue. The fall color is then a stunning bright red. Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' will thrive with varying results in zones 5 through 9.
The growth habit is decidedly pendulous and will form a beautiful low mound only gaining height as it matures and begins to mound over itself. 'Crimson Queen' will only grow to about 4 to 6 feet tall while growing to a larger width of 6 to 8 feet wide. Crimson Queen left on it's own is beautiful and graceful but with a little training can become a specimen anyone could be proud of.

Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer. Acer palmatum ‘English Lace’ is one of the very few lace leaf varieties that have an upright habit. While not as decidedly upright as ‘Seiryu’, ‘English Lace’ will still form a nice tree that is large for a Dissectum. Acer palmatum ‘English Lace’ leafs out in spring with red foliage that becomes burgundy later in spring. Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ has very fine linearilobum foliage and a small compact growth habit. More gardeners should find a spot for 'Enkan' in the garden. In spring foliage emerges a deep wine color and holds its red into the summer very well. Fall color ranges from orange red to deep red. Some palmate leaves appear on new growth but older foliage is quite narrow. It is very interesting the way leaves seem to hang downward from the petioles. This variety is said to come from South Korea but has a Japanese name that means the tube.
