It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease. Emerging green dusted with red in shady areas to a rusty red in more sun, 'Ornatum' forms a large graceful shrub when mature. While very heat tolerant 'Ornatum' does prefer light shade in hot climates. Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ was listed in catalogs in Japan since the mid 1800s this upright green Japanese Maple is mostly known for its bright red fall color. That is not the only feature that makes this great tree worth growing, red samaras hang from it's graceful branches during the summer forming a nice contrast with the green heavily textured leaves. The sturdy foliage helps 'Osakazuki tolerate full sun even in hotter climates. The cup like shape formed at the base of the leaf led the Japanese to refer to this tree as "Saki-cup-like leaf" or 'Osakazuki'. Fall color is a stunning bright red, Southern Living magazine even went as far as publishing an article a few years back stating that ‘Osakazuki’ had the best fall color of any maple. Acer palmatum ‘Otome zakura’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples and is one of our favorites. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Otome zakura’ has some of the brightest red foliage you can imagine. This incredible red color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Otome zakura’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright red foliage of spring. This red new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' is a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple with Brilliant Red Color
Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' is a dwarf Japanese maple that is extremely popular for its brilliant red color. 'Red Dragon' will stay more red during summer than most varieties. The coarse leaves begin the spring dark red and become more red as temperatures increase. As summer temperatures reach their peak and most other red varieties have turned green 'Red Dragon' still has a good bit of red left on it's leaves. Fall color is a dramatic crimson red.
The growth habit of 'Red Dragon' is not as pendulous as other weeping cultivars, at times it grows almost prostrate. 'Red Dragon' also stays a little smaller than other dwarf Japanese maples. 'Red Dragon' will max out around 6 feet tall but will only get 4 feet tall in many instances. 'Red Dragon' will get about as wide if not wider than it is tall growing to roughly 6 feet wide.
While 'Red Dragon' will tolerate full sun in some climates, it would prefer a break from the sun at some point during the day in hotter areas. Although 'Red Dragon is reported to be a moderate grower in some climates, we find it to be slower than average in the south. 'Red Dragon' will grow well in zones 5 through 9.

Acer palmatum ‘Red Emperor’ is a red Japanese maple tree was originally introduced by Dick Wolff at Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania as Emperor 1 in 1976 and much later patented under that name by someone in Oregon. Many growers grow this plant as 'Red Emperor'. It does not matter what you call it, this is a great plant.
'Red Emperor' is one of many in a long line of trees to claim the title "Better Than Bloodgood" and in some ways it is. 'Red Emperor' is rare in that it doesn't usually burn in full sun even in hotter climates. 'Red Emperor' holds its color through the summer better than most other red Japanese maple trees like 'Bloodgood'. This tree does not disappoint. Another advantage is that it usually leafs out in the spring a few days later than other red Japanese maple trees like 'Bloodgood' lessening the chance of frost damage. 'Red Emperor' is hardy in zones 4 through 10 and can handle full sun in pretty much any climate.
The growth rate of 'Red Emperor' Japanese maple is very good. 'Red Emperor' develops into a large red Japanese maple tree with a large, full canopy. 'Red Emperor' can grow to be about 15 to 18 feet tall and about 12-14 feet wide at the canopy.
