Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' Dwarf Japanese maple has become known as one of the very best red lace leaf Japanese maples. This notoriety comes from its strong growth rate and spectacular red color throughout the year. 'Tamukeyama' is one of the fastest growing dwarf Japanese maples that we grow. 'Tamukeyama' grows slightly more irregular and upright than other lace leaf varieties.
Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' has been grown in Japan for over 300 years. Recently it has become accepted as one of the best lace leaf varieties in cultivation, and probably the best red lace leaf for hot climates. 'Tamukeyama' tolerates full sun in even in hotter regions.
Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' is a larger grower for a dwarf Japanese maple but still only gets to be about 6 feet tall at maturity. 'Tamukeyama' grows with a weeping and spreading habit eventually maturing to about 6 to 8 feet wide.

Discovered as a chance seedling by J.R.P. van Hoey Smith this distinctive cultivar bears the name of the arboretum where it was discovered. This fast growing cultivar tends to be mostly vase shaped for many years, although very old specimens begin to get more broad with age. The 3 things for which Trompenburg is most famous all have to do with the foliage. The first is the spring color which is a dark purple sometimes almost appearing brown or chocolate turning more red as summer begins but holding a nice color well into even an Atlanta summer. The second is the very sharp serrations to the lobes of the leaf. The third is the way the lobes curl at the ends, but this does not always appear until the tree somewhat matures. Trompenburg will tolerate full Sun even in the south. Fall color is a brilliant scarlet red. However, the reason to grow this tree is for the wonderful bright red fall color. 'Tsukubane' is fast growing and becomes a large round topped specimen with age. Older trees regularly achieve heights of more than 25 feet. The Japanese name means ridge on Mount Tsukuba.

The leaf of 'Washi-no-o’ is a little more coarse than some dissectums and the margins of each lobe are cut more regularly and less deep than most dissectums giving it a very unique texture. This mounding shrub type maple tolerates more sun than most green lace leafs. I have even grown this cultivar in full sun in Atlanta, Georgia but some shade would be appreciated.
