‘Pixie' is very similar to the more famous 'Bloodgood in mature shape only much smaller. ‘Pixie’ has foliage that emerges bright red in spring before turning much darker and holding its deep red color well into the summer even in hot climates. Then the show starts as the foliage turns first scarlet then becoming fire red as temperatures drop in fall. Acer palmatum ‘Kin pai’ is a variegated form of ‘Osakazuki’. Everything about ‘Kin pai’ is similar to that of its parent plant, ‘Osakazuki’, except for the pink and red edges to the leaves. The leaves of ‘Kin pai’ are also much narrower than the large leaves of ‘Osakazuki’. The variegation on the leaves of ‘Kin pai’ is most prominent in the spring, but can be seen pretty much all Sumer as well. Acer palmatum 'Corallinum' represents a fine example of a whole group of similar maples that emerge salmon-pink to pinkish-red in spring. These 5 lobed semi dwarf trees are all known for there spectacular spring displays. More pink than 'Shinde shojo' or Beni maiko', Corallinum really stands out in the garden. Even the new stems and petioles are pink to red. Though a fantastic tree it tends to always be leggy in pots and never really fills in until planted in the ground for a couple of years. Also 'Corallinum is never as pink for us in the Southeast as it is for people in cooler climates. After turning green in early June we are usually treated to a second burst of color in August with the new flush of pinkish-red new leaves. Fall color is usually an orange-red to pink-red.

Acer palmatum ‘Beni komachi’ is one of the most unique Japanese maples in existence. The name means red beautiful little girl, and aptly describes this attractive maple. Emerging foliage in spring is red but turns to a dark purple fairly quick. As the summer heat approaches the small crinkled leaves turn a very nice dark green but remain edged in purple giving this plant one of the most unique textures in the garden. 'Beni komachi' is slow growing but will eventually grow into a small tree. Fast growing stems with large atypical leaves should be removed. Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Japanese Version) Rare Japanese Maple

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. One named in England, and selected from the Exbury gardens around 1990 and this one, the original Japanese clone, dating back to at least 1882 in Japan. Like the Exbury version, the name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The new leaves appear a soft brick red in early spring but become darker red in a sunny location. In summer leaves first go bronze and then olive green. this happens more quickly in hot climates. 'Chitose yama' becomes a large almost prostrate or even gently cascading shrub usually wider than tall. Acer palmatum 'Lightning' is a red Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves. The leaves of 'Lightning' are red to purple in the spring and turn to a greenish color in the summer. The leaves then turn bright yellow in the fall which is where it gets its name! 'Lightning' has a somewhat dense and shrubby habit. The leaf shape and structure of 'Lightning' give it contrast and differentiation from other red Japanese maple varieties. 'Lightning' is a moderately growing upright Japanese maple that should mature into a very attractive small to medium sized tree with a dense and shrubby look.

Acer palmatum 'Trompenburg' Red Japanese Maple

Discovered as a chance seedling by J.R.P. van Hoey Smith this distinctive cultivar bears the name of the arboretum where it was discovered. This fast growing cultivar tends to be mostly vase shaped for many years, although very old specimens begin to get more broad with age. The 3 things for which Trompenburg is most famous all have to do with the foliage. The first is the spring color which is a dark purple sometimes almost appearing brown or chocolate turning more red as summer begins but holding a nice color well into even an Atlanta summer. The second is the very sharp serrations to the lobes of the leaf. The third is the way the lobes curl at the ends, but this does not always appear until the tree somewhat matures. Trompenburg will tolerate full Sun even in the south. Fall color is a brilliant scarlet red. There is some speculation that 'Trompenburg' may have shirasawanum parentage due to the fact that the samaras are held erect. 10 Year Size: Height: 15-18 Feet Width: 10-14 Feet

'Stella Rossa' translates to Red Star. The habit of this cultivar is decidedly weeping, delicate and graceful. While it tolerates full sun, 'Stella Rossa' would like to have a little shade in hotter climates. The foliage of 'Stella Rossa' emerges bright red in early spring holding the bright red color well into summer before turning darker red and eventually burgundy. In very hot climates it turns bronze by September but never totally green like most other red maples in our nursery. While it may be a little slower growing than many of the dissectums it holds its bright red color in the Southeast better than almost every other cultivar. Acer palmatum 'Oto hime' is a dwarf Japanese maple with small leaves that emerge almost yellow in spring tipped with red edges. In summer foliage turns a nice even green. Fall color is generally orange but sometimes red or yellow. This wonderful little tree was named after Queen Otohime a mermaid queen who ruled a fabled kingdom at the bottom of the sea. The name means little queen and the name is perfect for this little queen of the garden.
