Acer palmatum ‘Koto maru’ is a fast growing dwarf Japanese maple. ‘Koto maru’ has very small, rounded leaves that emerge in the spring yellow with a red-oranges border. The coloring of the leaves really puts on a show in the spring. The leaves then fade to a light green throughout the summer. Fall color is then orange to red. ‘Koto maru’ will have long shoots of new growth while it is young, but it will develop into a dense, shrubby tree at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 3-5 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Koto ito Komachi’ is a small linearlobum found as a chance seedling and introduced by J.D. Vertrees. Most leaves have 5 lobes some have only 3. Young vigorous plants may have course foliage but older plants display the characteristic very fine almost hairlike foliage. Very rare in the nursery trade as their are many plants sold under this name that are not the same cultivar. The Japanese name means old 5 string harp. Komachi can also be a horticultural term for dwarf. Fall color is yellow to orange.

Acer palmatum ‘Kin pai’ is a variegated form of ‘Osakazuki’. Everything about ‘Kin pai’ is similar to that of its parent plant, ‘Osakazuki’, except for the pink and red edges to the leaves. The leaves of ‘Kin pai’ are also much narrower than the large leaves of ‘Osakazuki’. The variegation on the leaves of ‘Kin pai’ is most prominent in the spring, but can be seen pretty much all Sumer as well. ‘Disscetum Nigrum’ is known for the silver hairs covering the emerging foliage in early spring, this old cultivar is a great addition to any garden. Acer palmatum ‘Asahi zuru’ is a medium sized Japanese maple with intense variegation. This tree is splashed with pinks and whites and greens. These colors are similar but more consistent than the classic ‘Oridino nishiki’. ‘Asahi zuru’ will have occasional pink striations on the bark. Acer palmatum 'Kawahara Rose' is a beautiful corallinum type Japanese maple. 'Kawahara Rose' emerges in spring with a gorgeous rosy pinkish red color. These pinkish leaves then transition to orange and eventually green by summer. In late summer there is often a flush of new growth which is the rosy spring color that stands out beautifully on top of the older green foliage. Fall color for 'Kawahara Rose' is yellow to orange.

‘Pixie' is very similar to the more famous 'Bloodgood in mature shape only much smaller. ‘Pixie’ has foliage that emerges bright red in spring before turning much darker and holding its deep red color well into the summer even in hot climates. Then the show starts as the foliage turns first scarlet then becoming fire red as temperatures drop in fall. A fast growing cultivar that comes out more orange red than purple red in early spring but rapidly darkens as it is exposed to the spring sun, 'Oshio beni' is a strong grower. It will not hold it's color as long into the hot summers of the Southeast as well as some other cultivars, turning green by late June in Atlanta. What 'Oshio beni' lacks in summer color it more than makes up for in the fall when the foliage turns a bright orange red. The name means the great red tide.

Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer.
