Acer palmatum ‘Koto no Ito’ has been described as the dancing monkey tree for the way the extremely narrow lobes dance in the wind. The habit of 'Koto no ito' is upright and very nice. It's vary narrow strap like leaves inspired Koichiro Wada of Japan to name it 'Koto no ito' which means harp strings. Fall color begins as a wonderful yellow moving towards gold and finishing blended with orange.

Acer palmatum 'Ichigyoji' Green Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Ichigyoji’ is a green upright Japanese maple with large, broad leaves. ‘Ichigyoji’ is often considered the sister tree to ‘Osakazuki’ as they have many similarities including their large, broad leaves and bold, green color. ‘Ichigyoji’ also leafs out a pale orange color in the early spring similar to its sister, ‘Osakazuki’. The similarities don’t end with the leaves. The branching structures of these two trees are also similar in that ‘Ichigyoji’ shares ‘Osakazuki’s strong, stiff branches that give the tree an elegant shape that is endearing for a Japanese maple. The biggest difference in the two trees is the fall color. ‘Osakazuki’ is known for its bright reddish orange fall color that makes the tree look like it has been set ablaze. ‘Ichigyoji’ has a similarly stunning fall display, but it has a combination of yellows and oranges that create a vibrant, neon orange appearance. ‘Ichigyoji’ is a medium growing Japanese maple that should reach about 15 feet tall in 10 years.10 Year Size: Height: 14-16 feet Width: 6-8 feet

For me, while the bark on new shoots is an interesting green the bark never quite lives up to its promise. but there is a completely different outstanding reason to grow this tree. Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. Acer palmatum ‘Beni komachi’ is one of the most unique Japanese maples in existence. The name means red beautiful little girl, and aptly describes this attractive maple. Emerging foliage in spring is red but turns to a dark purple fairly quick. As the summer heat approaches the small crinkled leaves turn a very nice dark green but remain edged in purple giving this plant one of the most unique textures in the garden. 'Beni komachi' is slow growing but will eventually grow into a small tree. Fast growing stems with large atypical leaves should be removed. Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Japanese Version) Rare Japanese Maple

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. One named in England, and selected from the Exbury gardens around 1990 and this one, the original Japanese clone, dating back to at least 1882 in Japan. Like the Exbury version, the name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The new leaves appear a soft brick red in early spring but become darker red in a sunny location. In summer leaves first go bronze and then olive green. this happens more quickly in hot climates. 'Chitose yama' becomes a large almost prostrate or even gently cascading shrub usually wider than tall. The light green spring color contrasts off the red bark very nicely. Fall color is a bright yellow. 'Sir Damon' is a great coral bark variety for someone that wants a coral bark Japanese maple but needs a shorter tree than the typical Sango kaku coral bark Japanese maple.

Acer palmatum ‘Sumi nagashi’ is a matsumurae type Japanese maple tree with deeply separated lobes and serrated leaves that will make a wonderful addition to any garden. Introduced in Japan in 1930, Sumi nagashi translates to village on the river bank. 'Sumi nagashi' is fast growing and will mature eloquently. Young trees grow vase shaped an upright, becoming much more rounded and full as they age. Leaves in spring will emerge sort of maroon but will be much more red than the purple color of varieties like 'Bloodgood'. As the heat of our southern summer starts to rise the foliage will first start to turn more red, then bronze before fading to green by mid-summer. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is a small maple that will grow much wider than tall, Like it's close relative 'Kiyo hime' this cultivar emerges in spring with red tips to the leaves before turning green for the summer. there are very slight differences between the 2 maples. We find that the edge of 'Murasaki kiyohime' to be more maroon red and 'Kiyo hime' to be more orange red but the tint of these colors can be affected by the sun making them hard to distinguish. Fall color ranges from bronze to orange. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is also slightly more upright when young, often sending up vertical shoots of a foot or more on very young plants only to spend the rest of it's life thickening up and growing wider.
