Acer palmatum 'Okushimo' Green Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Okushimo' was listed as early as 1710 in Japan. This old cultivar with a name that means pepper and salt, definitely has a place in the modern landscape. Leaves emerge chartreuse in spring with bright red petioles, before turning darker green and displaying cool little dimples all over the leaves. Its these dimples that reminded the Japanese of salt and pepper. Summer turns the leaves much darker and they begin to curl inward at the edges of the little sharp lobes. The distinctive green curled leaves of 'Okushimo' give it an ability to contrast just right with other plants in the garden and the fact that it is so decidedly vase shaped with most of its width above head height means that it can be tucked into corners and between paths or next to sidewalks. We do suggest that you plant 'Okushimo' in partial shade in hotter climates. The great fall color ranges from yellow to orange and even red.

Acer palmatum 'Oki kasane' Corallinum Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Oki kasane’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Oki kasane’ has beautiful peachy orange foliage. This incredible color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Oki kasane’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright orange-red foliage of spring. This new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Fall color is then orange to red.

Acer palmatum ‘Koto no Ito’ has been described as the dancing monkey tree for the way the extremely narrow lobes dance in the wind. The habit of 'Koto no ito' is upright and very nice. Acer palmatum 'Oregon Sunset' is a unique variety of Japanese maple in that it has broad leaves but grows as much laterally as it does upright. Acer palmatum ‘Sumi nagashi’ is a matsumurae type Japanese maple tree with deeply separated lobes and serrated leaves that will make a wonderful addition to any garden. Introduced in Japan in 1930, Sumi nagashi translates to village on the river bank. 'Sumi nagashi' is fast growing and will mature eloquently. Young trees grow vase shaped an upright, becoming much more rounded and full as they age. It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease. While very heat tolerant 'Ornatum' does prefer light shade in hot climates.
