Acer palmatum ‘Japanese Princess’ is one of the most exciting dwarf Japanese maples in existence right now. ‘Japanese Princess’ is from the Mikawa Yatsabusa family, meaning that it has short internodal lengths on the branches which creates a stacking effect of the leaves. ‘Japanese Princess’ emerges with a bright red color to the leaves. The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. By summer, the color of the leaves fades to a light green color. Fall color is a bright orange to red.

This cultivar out of Australia has an interesting reddish color in early spring becoming more bronze as summer approaches. Reportedly this bronze color persists most of the summer but in hotter climates the bronze fades to mostly green with a hint of the former color remaining on the leaf edges. Acer palmatum ‘Seiun kaku’ is a Japanese cultivar has bright green leaves and red petioles. Similar to 'Mikawa yatsubusa' in that the leaves are layered one over the other like tiles on a roof but 'Seuin kaku' is much faster growing developing into a small more open and airy tree. 'Seiun kaku' finishes most years with a very nice deep red fall color. The Japanese name means blue-green tower or palace in the clouds.

Acer palmatum 'Rhode Island Red' is a dwarf Japanese maple with much larger leaves than is typical of a dwarf Japanese maple. The leaves of 'Rhode Island Red' are very similar to popular varieties such as 'Bloodgood' and 'Red Emperor'. 'Rhode Island Red' has broad leaves that emerge bright red in spring before darkening to a burgundy color for most of the spring. The color of 'Rhode Island Red' will fade slightly in the summer as most red Japanese maples do. The leaves then turn bright red in the fall. 'Rhode Island Red' has a short, compact habit that is very unique compared to most Japanese maples.

Acer palmatum ‘White Peaches’ is a heavily reticulated Japanese maple. ‘White Peaches’ emerges in spring with brilliant white leaves that appear to be dipped in red. These red tips go away rather quickly, giving way to the bright white spring leaves. The white leaves are contrasted by the bright green veining on each leaf. While the colors do fade by the summer time, there is still quite a bit of reticulated variegation left on the leaves throughout the summer. Acer palmatum 'Carll's Corner' has a short center lobe that gives this small, dense red maple an interesting texture. Fall color is dark red. Slow growing, 'Carll's Corner' eventually forms nice rounded shrub. Though often misspelled as ‘Carli’s Corner’, the correct name is 'Carll's Corner' which is a shopping center in Bridgeton/Upper Deerfield, NJ. This is where the original broom was found in a tree.

Pinus parviflora 'Adcock's Dwarf' Dwarf Japanese White Pine

For a gardener with patience this very dwarf Japanese white pine can become the star of the garden. This plant was found in England at Hillier's Nursery in the 1960's and named for the head propagator at the time, Graham Adcock. Growing only 1 to 2 inches per year Adcock's dwarf is often used in rock gardens, miniature train gardens and for bonsai. The very short dark blue-green needles are in perfect proportion to the small plant giving even a young specimen the appearance of a very old tree.
