Acer palmatum 'Chantilly Lace' Lace Leaf Japanese Maple

‘Chantilly Lace’ was found at Red Maple Nursery in 1949 and introduced by Billy Shwartz. This great Japanese maple with the Rock and Roll name has very finely cut leaves.  New growth appears red but very quickly changes to green from the center of the leaf out. This effect gives the plant almost a variegated appearance. By summer the foliage is light green almost chartreuse and contrasts greatly with other green maples that start yellow-green only to darken as summer approaches. Fall color is bright raspberry red. 'Chantilly Lace' grows into an irregular mound, some pruning of unruly branches will add to its appeal. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 6-8 feet Spring Color: Peach Summer Color: Green Fall Color: Raspberry Red Sun Tolerance: Shade Planting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil

Soon after, most of the leaf turns green leaving just the margins a very attractive red. The red and green of the bi color leaf at this stage makes the overall tree appear almost orange and gives it a very distinctive appearance. In some climates this look lasts well into the summer but in hotter climates where some afternoon shade would be greatly appreciated, 'Baldsmith' fades to green as summer takes hold. Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Ex bury) - mapleridgenursery
Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Ex bury) Rare Japanese Maple
from $39.00
Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. The original, a red clone from Japan dating back to the list of 1882 and this one, a green clone, named at Ex bury gardens in England around 1990. The name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.  Since this tree has no legitimate claim to the name being second, we refer to it as Chitose yama "Ex bury form".  All that aside, this is a wonderful tree. Good enough to win the Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merritt in 1993. In early spring the leaves emerge a distinctive  pale green with red tips covered with a white pubescence. If this weren't striking enough the entire tree is usually covered with an abundance of beautiful little red blooms. As temperatures warm and summer approaches the heavily textured leaves turn olive green complimented by the now ripe red samaras adorning the tree. As if all this were not enough, the real show starts in fall when this form of Chitose yama turns a traffic stopping bright red that literally glows. Usually as wide as tall, mature specimens of this clone become exceptionally graceful.10 Year size: Height: 5-6 Feet  Width: 6-8 Feet
Acer palmatum 'Green Hornet' - Maple Ridge Nursery
Acer palmatum 'Green Hornet' Green Dwarf Japanese Maple
from $39.00
'Green Hornet' is unusually fast growing for a lace leaf maple and because of this it can benefit greatly from pruning or training when young to get it started in the right direction. Shoots on newly grafted plants may grow 2 feet or more the first year. As the plant ages its vigorous growth becomes an asset creating a graceful plant with long arching branches. Spring growth is lime green sometimes with orange margins when placed in more sun, however at least partial shade is preferred in hotter climates. Fall color is stunning and bright red which is quite rare for green dissectums which usually display yellow to orange fall color. 10 Year Size:   Height:  4-6 Feet    Width:  7-9 FeetSpring Color: Lime GreenSummer Color: GreenFall Color: RedSun Tolerance: PartialPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil
Acer palmatum 'Bonfire' - mapleridgenursery Acer palmatum 'Bonfire' - mapleridgenursery
Acer palmatum 'Bonfire' Corallinum Japanese Maple
from $39.00
The first 4-6 weeks of spring there are very few Japanese Maples that can compete with the brilliant crimson red color of  'Bonfire' foliage. Unfortunately the spring color is short lived and turns first bronze and then green as summer nears. The growth habit is short and stocky, almost as wide as tall. Fall color in the south is usually bright red sometimes leaning toward orange-red. There seems to be some confusion with the similarity between 'Bonfire', 'Akaji nishiki' and 'Seigai'. It seems that these are three different plants, 'Bonfire' and 'Akaji Nishiki' leaves are practically the same but 'Bonfire' is shorter and denser. 'Seigai' has a different leaf shape and is much darker green in summer.Ten year size: Height: 5-7 feet    Width: 4-6 feetSpring Color: Red Summer Color: GreenFall Color: Orange-Red

Acer palmatum 'Shojo nomura' Red Upright Japanese Maple
from $49.00
'Shojo nomura' means "beautiful red faced monkey" and this vivid image seems to fit this wonderful small tree. Decidedly upright, 'Shojo nomura' emerges dark purple almost black in early spring but later growth is decidely red and seems to be more red than purple most of the season. It holds its color in our gardens as long as any upright palmatum we grow and if it does fade to green in very hot years it never bronzes out like other red cultivars. Also it seems to hold it's color better in shade than most varieties. Brilliant effects can be obtained by planting this tree where its translucent leaves can be back lit by the morning or evening sun. Fall color is red and usually outstanding.
