Acer palmatum ‘Mahogany’ is a fantastic, red upright Japanese maple. Brilliant deep red leaves emerge on ‘Mahogany’ in the spring. ‘Mahogany’ then holds varying shades of red all year long, often developing a rusty red color in the summer. Fall color is a bright orange-red that distinguishes itself from most other red upright Japanese maples. ‘Mahogany’ handles full sun and heat well even in the hottest climates.

Discovered by Ed "Skeeter" Rod in Pennsylvania this is a witches broom with the usual twiggy growth but a very vigorous upright habit. The small attractive leaves emerge bright red in spring before turning dark red in summer. This plant holds it's color very well even in hot climates. It also seems to hold color well in fairly heavy shade. Pinus parviflora ‘Goldylocks’ is a dwarf Japanese white pine with golden variegation to otherwise green foliage. ‘Goldylocks’ is a short, upright growing pine that shouldn’t reach more than 4 feet at maturity if that. The golden color is best displayed in nearly full sun situations. ‘Goldylocks’ is also known for its small, attractive cones. ‘Goldylocks’ is most likely synonymous with Pinus Parviflora ‘Tenysu kazu’, however there is enough conflicting information that we keep both varieties labelled separately. Pictures were taken from our ‘Goldylocks’ growing in heavy shade. Notice the lack of golden color. Acer palmatum 'Otome zakura' Corallinum Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Otome zakura’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples and is one of our favorites. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Otome zakura’ has some of the brightest red foliage you can imagine. This incredible red color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Otome zakura’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright red foliage of spring. This red new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. ‘Attaryi is very similar to 'Aconitifolium' except that the leaves are a little larger and not as deeply cut. 'Attaryi' is a very fine small to medium sized maple. While growing slowly and needing some protection from sun and drying winds especially in hotter climates, 'Attaryi' matures into a beautiful, round topped tree eventually becoming about as wide as it is tall. Also a nice touch are the very pretty small blooms displayed in early spring. Fall color is a striking brilliant red, with yellow and orange.

Pinus thunbergii ‘Kyokko yatsubusa’ is a Japanese black pine that is known for its rough, cork bark that it develops with age. ‘Kyokko yatsubusa’ has medium green needles with medium length similar to many other Japanese black pine cultivars. ‘Kyokko yatsubusa’ has a dwarf-like growth habit that does not get very tall. In fact, much of ‘Kyokko yatsubusa’s growth is lateral. An upright vase shaped form of coral bark maple. The bark is usually more red in winter compared to the salmon color of it's more famous cousin 'Sango kaku'. 'Beni kawa' also tends to be slightly wider and shorter. You will sometimes see 'Beni kawa' spelled as 'Beni gawa', this is due to a translation error when it was first brought to the U.S. and some growers have never corrected the mistake. Fall color ranges from yellow to orange and usually is an attractive combination of both.
