Acer japonicum ‘Meigetsu’ is a vigorous growing full moon Japanese maple with large, round leaves. ‘Meigetsu’ emerges in the spring with large, light green leaves. These leaves then darken to a dark green for most of the summer. Fall is when ‘Meigetsu’ puts on a show. Much like other full moon Japanese maple varieties, ‘Meigetsu’ has splashes of yellows, oranges, and reds across the foliage in the fall. 'Beni hime' is a great, very small maple that comes out a bright red in spring. After the first big push on new grafts, which can be 4 to 6 inches long, 'Beni hime' becomes one of the slowest growing maples with annual growth rarely exceeding 1-2 inches. As the weather gets hotter in summer the older leaves turn dark green while the ever present new growth on the tips tends to stay bright red, although it seems quite ironic that a tree that stays so small should always have new growth. Beni hime is one of the best small plants for the landscape but always seems to be in short supply due to the fact that it can be difficult to propagate. 'Aratama' is a very unusual, very attractive dwarf maple. In early spring the brick red leaves appear to be clumped on the long horizontal branches. Acer palmatum 'Pendula Julian' is a very pendulous Japanese maple and benefits from being grafted higher or staking when young. Leaves emerge rusty red to more of a pink red depending on sun exposure but always with a green mid-vein. In early spring the abundant blooms put on quite a show for a maple. In cooler climates rusty red color extends well into the summer but in hotter climates 'Pendula Julian’ fades to an attractive olive green by mid June. Fall color is fantastic and can vary from bright fiery red to red with yellows and oranges mixed.
