Acer palmatum ‘Iijima sunago’ is an old cultivar from Japan that was first mentioned in the 19th century. ‘Iijima sunago’ is an upright Japanese maple with dark orangish-red leaves with pronounced green veins in the spring. ‘Iijima sunago’ translates to “sand dusted” which describes the white specks that the leaves of this tree develops during most summers. Acer palmatum 'Skeleton Reach' is a Japanese maple with white reticulated variegation. 'Skeleton Reach' has some of the brightest white color to its leaves in the spring of any Japanese maple. Theses white leaves have green veins giving the foliage the reticulated look. These leaves will turn to a light green by summer but maintain the reticulation with darker green veins. 'Skeleton Reach' is going to provide a bright color all year long and eventually turn a bright yellow-orange in the fall. Acer palmatum ‘White Peaches’ is a heavily reticulated Japanese maple. ‘White Peaches’ emerges in spring with brilliant white leaves that appear to be dipped in red. These red tips go away rather quickly, giving way to the bright white spring leaves. The white leaves are contrasted by the bright green veining on each leaf. While the colors do fade by the summer time, there is still quite a bit of reticulated variegation left on the leaves throughout the summer. Acer palmatum ‘Seiun kaku’ is a Japanese cultivar has bright green leaves and red petioles. Similar to 'Mikawa yatsubusa' in that the leaves are layered one over the other like tiles on a roof but 'Seuin kaku' is much faster growing developing into a small more open and airy tree. The first 4-6 weeks of spring there are very few Japanese Maples that can compete with the brilliant crimson red color of  'Bonfire' foliage. Unfortunately the spring color is short lived and turns first bronze and then green as summer nears. The growth habit is short and stocky, almost as wide as tall. Fall color in the south is usually bright red sometimes leaning toward orange-red. There seems to be some confusion with the similarity between 'Bonfire', 'Akaji nishiki' and 'Seigai'. It seems that these are three different plants, 'Bonfire' and 'Akaji Nishiki' leaves are practically the same but 'Bonfire' is shorter and denser. 'Green Hornet' is unusually fast growing for a lace leaf maple and because of this it can benefit greatly from pruning or training when young to get it started in the right direction.
