Grafted Trees

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. The original, a red clone from Japan dating back to the list of 1882 and this one, a green clone, named at Ex bury gardens in England around 1990. The name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.  Since this tree has no legitimate claim to the name being second, we refer to it as Chitose yama "Ex bury form".  All that aside, this is a wonderful tree. Good enough to win the Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merritt in 1993. In early spring the leaves emerge a distinctive  pale green with red tips covered with a white pubescence. If this weren't striking enough the entire tree is usually covered with an abundance of beautiful little red blooms. As temperatures warm and summer approaches the heavily textured leaves turn olive green complimented by the now ripe red samaras adorning the tree. As if all this were not enough, the real show starts in fall when this form of Chitose yama turns a traffic stopping bright red that literally glows. Usually as wide as tall, mature specimens of this clone become exceptionally graceful.10 Year size: Height: 5-6 Feet  Width: 6-8 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Dragon’s Fire’ is an awesome lace leaf Japanese maple that leafs out bright, fiery red before turning peach, then burgundy, then green in the summer. ‘Dragon’s Fire’ then turns bright orange to red in the fall. This is an outstanding new lace leaf cultivar for us that we are very excited about. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Fall’s Fire’ is a fantastic small, upright Japanese maple with unique leaves that will add a different texture to the garden. ‘Fall’s Fire’ has much smaller leaves than most upright varieties and the leaves are deeply serrated, creating an almost lace leaf look to the foliage. ‘Fall’s Fire’ has beautiful green leaves throughout the spring and summer, but it unsurprisingly gets its name from the fall color. The name says it all here as fall sets this tree ablaze with oranges and yellows before becoming mostly red before dropping its leaves. ‘Fall’s Fire’ certainly is a show stopper at the end of the year. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Phantom Flame’ is a rare and unusual Japanese maple with a unique combination of “ghost” and “red finger nails“. ‘Phantom flame’ has bright white foliage in the spring with green veining. These bright leaves look as though they have been dipped in red paint. The bright, reticulated foliage remains through the spring, eventually turning a green color. Fall color is a beautiful orange. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Kamagata’ is dwarf form of palmatum introduced by J.D. Vertrees himself. The small delicate looking leaves first appear in spring edged in purple. By summer they become a nice bright green. Fall color is usually yellow to orange.10 year size: Height: 3-5 Feet   Width: 2-4 Feet    

Acer palmatum ‘Sekka yatsubusa’ has short internodal lengths that give this small plant a very different appearance as the leaves are bunched up along the stems. Red edges to the deeply divided leaves and red petioles add to the effect. All though very slow when young this small tree can grow quite vigorously under the right conditions. Once the tree gets a little older it begins to develop very interesting fasciations or flattened stems of congested growth. While like most maples 'Sekka yatsubusa' is happy in partial shade this adaptable cultivar does quite well in heavy shade or in full sun in all but the hottest climates. Buy Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' dancing peacock Japanese maple at Maple Ridge Nursery. 'Aconitifolium' has been known by many names such as "Dancing Peacock", "Maiku jaku", and "Fern Leaf", but regardless of what it is called, this tree boasts some of the best fall color or any Japanese maple. Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' has splashes of yellows, oranges, and red across the foliage in fall.

This may very well be the most heat tolerant of the shirasawanum varieties. The large luxurious green leaves are more deeply cut than many shirasawanum varieties and are quite sun tolerant in all but the hottest climates. 'Palmatifolium' is quite vigorous and forms a strong, sturdy upright tree becoming more rounded and wider with age. Most of all, the fall color is a dazzling array of orange, red and yellow tones. 10 Year Size: Height:  10-12 Feet    Width:  8-10 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Autumn Fire’ grows more prostrate than pendulous forming a beautiful mushroom shaped mound. The new spring foliage emerges light green edged in pink. As summer arrives the pink fades and the green leaves become darker. Fall color is a fiery mix of red and orange.  A chance seedling found in 1979, 'Autumn Fire' was finally named in 1996 by Dells Japanese Maple Nursery in Oregon.10 Year Size:  Height:  3-5 Feet    Width:  6-8 FeetSpring Color: Light GreenSummer Color: GreenFall Color: Orange RedSun Tolerance: FullPlanting: Elevated, Well Drained Soil

In early spring the palmate leaves emerge pinkish red with green veins giving the entire round topped small tree a stately appearance. As spring progresses the leaves change from that pink cast to bright red, then orange red all the time putting on a show. In cooler climates the colors last well into the summer before eventually turning first bronze and then green this happens quite early if you live in a hotter climate. In fall the show begins again with wonderful shades of red, orange and sometimes even yellow. The name comes from the Muro river in Japan. 10 Tear size:  Height: 8-10 Feet Width: 8-10 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Orion’ is another great plant from Dick Wolff of Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania, The very small deeply divided foliage appears bright cherry red in early spring. As the leaves age they become maroon, copper and olive green and much larger. This little tree always seems to have new growth at the tips with little bursts of red sitting at the branch ends creating an explosion of color like a miniature fireworks display in the garden. Fall color is generally a soft orange. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-5 Feet Width: 3-4 Feet

Acer shirasawanum ‘Gloria’ is a great little full moon Japanese maple with bright cherry red spring color. This colors hardens off to a dark maroon which lasts most of the summer. In fact, it holds red color into the summer longer than most other red full moon Japanese maples in hotter climates. Fall color is red or orange and wonderful. 10 Year Size: Height:  8-10 Feet    Width:  6-8 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ is an outstanding Japanese maple with reticulated variegation. ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ has white leaves with green veins in the spring. This coloring gives the appearance that ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ is glowing in the garden. The leaves will fade to green in the summer, but it still maintains much of the reticulated variegation. Fall color ranges from yellow to orange. ‘Alpine Silver Thread’ has an upright growth habit that doesn’t get very big.

Acer palmatum 'Black Hole' is a Japanese maple with reticulated variegation similar to its parent, 'Purple Ghost'. 'Black Hole' has even darker foliage than 'Purple Ghost'. The reticulated veins are very prominent early in spring but fade as the foliage gets darker. The fall color of 'Black Hole' is dark red. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet   Width: 6-8 feet 

Acer palmatum ‘Dai’ is a newer Japanese maple from Korea with an exceptional weeping habit. The leaves of ‘Dai’ are quite fine compared to other similar lace leaf Japanese maples. ‘Dai’ emerges in spring with a bright red color to the foliage with pink and orange undertones. ‘Dai’ then turns green by summer. ‘Dai’ then shows out again in the fall with an array of fiery reds and oranges. ‘Dai’ is a small growing Japanese maple with a strong weeping habit. For best colors, I would recommend providing ‘Dai’ morning sun and afternoon shade in hotter climates.10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 4-6 feet
