Picea abies ‘Pendula’ is a weeping form of Norway Spruce. With most of its growth going downward, ‘Pendula’ is usually staked to give it some height, but can also be left alone to form more of a ground cover. The needles of ‘Pendula’ are an attractive dark green with light green new growth. Picea abies ‘Pendula’ is an excellent tree to cascade over a wall or planter.

Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ has very fine linearilobum foliage and a small compact growth habit. More gardeners should find a spot for 'Enkan' in the garden. In spring foliage emerges a deep wine color and holds its red into the summer very well. Fall color ranges from orange red to deep red. Some palmate leaves appear on new growth but older foliage is quite narrow. It is very interesting the way leaves seem to hang downward from the petioles. Acer palmatum 'Trompenburg' Red Japanese Maple

Discovered as a chance seedling by J.R.P. van Hoey Smith this distinctive cultivar bears the name of the arboretum where it was discovered. This fast growing cultivar tends to be mostly vase shaped for many years, although very old specimens begin to get more broad with age. The 3 things for which Trompenburg is most famous all have to do with the foliage. The first is the spring color which is a dark purple sometimes almost appearing brown or chocolate turning more red as summer begins but holding a nice color well into even an Atlanta summer. The second is the very sharp serrations to the lobes of the leaf. The third is the way the lobes curl at the ends, but this does not always appear until the tree somewhat matures. Trompenburg will tolerate full Sun even in the south. Fall color is a brilliant scarlet red. There is some speculation that 'Trompenburg' may have shirasawanum parentage due to the fact that the samaras are held erect. 10 Year Size: Height: 15-18 Feet Width: 10-14 Feet

Spring color is bright red, holding well into summer before turning bronze or green. Picea orientalis ‘Skylands’ is an awesome, upright growing oriental spruce. The new growth of ‘Skylands’ glows a golden yellow, while the older foliage appears a darker green. ‘Skylands’ will mature to roughly ten feet tall in ten years and becomes quite sun tolerant with age.

Acer palmatum 'Scolopendrifolium Rubrum' Red Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Scolopenrifolium rubrum' is a great red linearlobum type Japanese maple that is often confused with some of the other linearlobum varieties and maybe even used as a catch all name for red linearlobum plants. Our cultivar however is very distinct. The long narrow lobs are somewhat wider than plants like Red Pygmy but more narrow than 'Beni otake'. It is definitely different than 'Atrolineare' but may be synonymous with Keiser. While the overall growth tends to be slow and bushy sometimes new limbs can grow three or 4 feet in just a few weeks. These limbs are generally unattractive and should be pruned. The spring color is a very attractive dark red holding into well summer before turning bronze. Fall color is wonderful and often described as raspberry red.
