Acer palmatum ‘Crimson Prince’ was introduced by Princeton Nurseries in 1988. This is one of many in a long line of cultivars claiming better than 'Bloodgood' status. Being relatively fast growing 'Crimson Prince' is a very desirable red cultivar with dark purple almost black stems. The spring color is slightly more red and not as dark as 'Bloodgood' and does hold well into the summer finally turning first bronze then olive green by mid to late August in hot climates. As soon as cool nights start to show up in fall the nice dark red color quickly returns. This plant is very heavily branched and dense making it an excellent choice for a screening plant. Acer palmatum ‘Lemon Chiffon’ emerges in spring with a much brighter yellow color to the leaves than just about any other lace leaf variety. The leaves darken a little bit in the summer to a chartreuse green which really stands out among the muted greens more typically found in the summer. Fall color is a bright yellow to orange. ‘Lemon Chiffon’ has a low spreading habit and should never get as tall as it is wide.

With one of the most dissected leaves you will ever see on a Japanese maple 'Red Filigree Lace' has been a highly sought after "collectors plant" for many years. Originally propagated from a chance seedling by Will Curtis in Sherwood, Oregon, this plant will become an eye-catching topic of conversation in any garden. Very pendulous the habit is mounding and very low unless staked or grafted on a standard. 'Red Filigree Lace' probably holds it' red color in summer in the Southeastern U.S. better than any red cultivar of Japanese maple. It does however require some shade. Amazingly it will hold its color even in somewhat shady conditions. Given perfect growing conditions it is not only a reliable plant but in some instances becomes quite vigorous. Unfortunately in hot climates it is very slow growing and is susceptible to over watering when young. In very early spring the delicate looking foliage is decidedly red becoming darker purple in summer before turning crimson in fall. Do not let the intricate finely cut lacy leaf fool you, as long as you provide a well-drained environment 'Red Filigree Lace' is a very sturdy and hardy plant that any gardener should feel lucky to have.

Very similar to 'Sango kaku' but smaller, 'Winter Flame' can vary greatly under different growing conditions. If stressed this little guy hardly grows at all and can be a little finicky. If happy in its environment it can actually grow fairly quick although still a good bit slower than 'Sango kaku'. We find that giving it well drained soil and adequate moisture is the key to happiness for this little maple. Spring color is lime green becoming darker in summer and then yellow to orange and yellow in fall. Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' is the famous "Floating Cloud" maple. In early spring dazzling foliage opens speckled with pink and white. In summer the pink fades leaving only a dusting of white to hint at its former spring glory. Unfortunately in areas with hotter climates the variegation is not nearly as well developed and some years does not show at all. Oh the anticipation of a gardener in a hot climate hoping each spring that this will be the year that his prized "Floating Cloud" will actually show its colors. Acer palmatum ‘Manyo no sato’ is a wonderfully funky maple with the Japanese name that means "village of 10,000 leaves". ‘Manyo no sato’ is very similar to 'Beni shien'. In early spring the irregularly shaped leaves emerge cream and purple. Leaves become more purple and green with cream before the purple starts to fade in summer. While fairly sun tolerant this cultivar prefers some shade in hotter climates. In more sun the red colors become more prominent while in more shade the variegation becomes much more subtle. Fall color is red to orange and very pleasing.

Acer palmatum ‘Jeannie’s Dream’ is an upright growing Japanese maple with a wide, spreading habit. ‘Jeannie’s Dream’ is bright red early in spring before becoming more burgundy for the rest of the spring. The colors fade to a bronze or green for most of the summer. The leaves change to bright red again in the fall. The leaves of ‘Jeannie’s Dream’ have deeply divided lobes.
