Acer palmatum ‘Japanese Princess’ is one of the most exciting dwarf Japanese maples in existence right now. ‘Japanese Princess’ is from the Mikawa Yatsabusa family, meaning that it has short internodal lengths on the branches which creates a stacking effect of the leaves. ‘Japanese Princess’ emerges with a bright red color to the leaves. The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. By summer, the color of the leaves fades to a light green color. Fall color is a bright orange to red.

Acer palmatum 'Ikandi' (Pre-Order)

Acer palmatum ‘Ikandi’ is an extremely variegated Japanese maple discovered as a chance seedling from Acer palmatum ‘Alpenweiss’ by Talon Buchholz. The leaves on ‘Ikandi emerge almost entirely pink before the green and white develop around the veins. The pink variegation fades to green and creamy white by summer time and eventually will turn orange to red in the fall.
‘Ikandi’ needs to be protected from the hot afternoon sun, but morning or dappled sun help to provide excellent color to the variegated leaves in the spring. Variegated leaves on ‘Ikandi’ develop more as it matures, so be patient with this one and you will reap the beautiful benefits in the long run. ‘Ikandi’ will grow into a small to medium sized tree that should only reach eight to ten feet tall at maturity.

‘Heartbeat’ is an Australian cultivar that is just making its way into the gardening culture of the United States. 'Heartbeat' would be a great addition to any garden. The leaves are extremely dissected with lobes that are held very far apart, making the overall leaf almost appear round. The habit is very low and spreading forming a plant that is much wider than tall. Spring color is more red and less purple than other similar Japanese Maples. As summer approaches leaves turn first bronze then green but this vigorous grower seems to put on new red growth at the tips all summer long even in hot climates. Fall color is crimson.

Most literature credits David Verkade, an 8th generation horticulturalist who has discovered and named many awesome cultivars himself, with discovery of this fantastic little plant. Dave however gives credit where credit is due and will be the first to tell you that this witches broom was found by his father John Verkade in the 1980's.
