Acer palmatum 'Paisleigh' is a dwarf Japanese maple with large, dissected leaves. These leaves emerge in spring bright green, sometimes with a pinkish hue. These leaves then get an orange hue to them during the summer that is quite attractive. The fall color ranges from yellow to orange to red. 'Paisleigh' was originally found as a seedling from 'Autumn Fire'. We originally named this tree 'Summer Desire' based on the interesting colors the tree can have during the summer. However, it is now known as 'Paisleigh', named after my daughter Madelyn Paisleigh. The name also fits as the leaves are unusually shaped for a lace leaf Japanese Maple. The leaves are large and rounded with broad lobes. The shape of the leaves coupled with the array of colors that can be found at different times throughout the year gives the appearance of paisleys. This is a brand new variety introduced by Maple Ridge Nursery.

Acer palmatum 'Rite of Spring' has a thinner deeply divided leaf than the majority of broad leaf Japanese maples. These leaves emerge in the spring with a bright red color. The color of the leaves darkens to a deeper burgundy red in the summer. The leaves change back to a bright red in the fall. 'Rite of Spring' is a shorter growing tree for an upright Japanese maple and has a real full habit. The picture is green because of heavy shade.

This little plant has deeply divided leaves that are clustered tightly along the branches. With short internodal lengths 'Yuri hime can be quite difficult to propagate therefore it is rarely seen in nurseries. Spring color is pale green growing darker in summer even more so in heavy shade. While sun tolerant in many areas, it should be placed in partial shade in hotter climates. Fall color is orange to yellow and usually not spectacular.

Acer palmatum ‘O jishi’ is one of the famous lions head maples. 'O jishi' is the male lion and 'Meijishi' is the female lion. Shishigashira means lions head, and while this term can be used to describe either cultivar it is generally used to describe 'Meijishi'. The leaves of 'Ojishi' are heavily crinkled but lighter in color and not quite as tightly crinkled as 'Meijishi'. 'O jishi' is also a much slower growing smaller tree. In full sun new growth has a red tinge to the tips of the foliage. Fall color is red and glorious. The leaves appear very crowded on the stem giving the tree a compact and congested look, with the short internodal length making it hard to propagate and contributing to the fact that it is rarely seen in nurseries. Acer palmatum ‘Frosted Purple’ is reticulated Japanese maple with outstanding color particularly in the spring. ‘Frosted Purple’ is similar to the Japanese maples in the “Ghost” series in that it has reticulated variegation and the unique, jagged edges to the leaves. ‘Frosted Purple’ comes out a very light purple color in the spring. Acer palmatum 'Emerald Lace' is one of the fastest growing dwarf Japanese maples there is. Shaping and pruning when young helps this cultivar live up to its potential as a wonderful garden specimen. 'Emerald Lace' is a very fast grower and has the natural inclination to grow outward and downward. This is the typical growth habit of a weeping dwarf Japanese maple but with the extreme speed at which 'Emerald Lace' grows these growth habits can be exaggerated.
'Emerald Lace' should grow to be about 4 to 6 feet tall at maturity with a good spread of 6 to 8 feet wide. Acer palmatum ‘Aka shigitatsu sawa’ has amazing early spring variegation. Almost the entire leaf will be cream with undertones of red and dark green veins. The leaves will turn green in the summer but the veins will be darker. 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' will not tolerate afternoon sun in hot climates but should be placed where it can get 3-4 hours of morning sun because light is required to get the red tones to show up. This plant is slow to mature but will turn into a small round topped tree that will be almost as wide as tall.
