Acer Palmatum Japanese Maples

Acer palmatum ‘Katsura hime’ has some of the most remarkable yellow spring color of any Japanese maple. Similar to that of ‘Katsura’ but on steroids. ‘Katsura hime’ displays a golden color with hints of yellows and oranges that really pops in the garden. Like ‘Katsura’, ‘Katsura hime’ is one of the very first trees to emerge in spring with its bright, showy leaves. The golden colors of ‘Katsura hime’ eventually fade to a light green or chartreuse by summer. Fall color is then typically a shade of bright orange. ‘Katsura hime’ is a smaller growing tree than ‘Katsura’ with a more compact growth habit. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 3-5 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Dragon Tears’ is a semi-pendulous tree that grows more out rather than up or down. ‘Dragon Tears’ will get some height, but its growth habit will result in a tree that is at least as wide as it is tall. ‘Dragon Tears’ has small, deeply divided, broad leaves. These leaves have a nice, deep burgundy color in the spring. The leaves will fade somewhat in the summer, but should always maintain at least a hint of burgundy. The the fall, ‘Dragon Tears’ displays a nice orange-red fall color that will put on a show. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Berrima Bridge’ is a dainty little lace leaf Japanese Maple with delicate leaves and a low, spreading growth habit. Leaves on ‘Berrima Bridge’ emerge with an orange-peach color in the spring before settling into an attractive green color throughout the summer. Fall color is a bright fiery red color that stands out even among other great fall color Japanese Maples. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Nancy Ann’ is a delicate lace leaf Japanese maple with pinkish red leaves in the spring. These leaves change to orange then bronze then green in the summer. Fall color is yellow to orange. ‘Nancy Ann’ is essentially the unvariegated form of ‘Toyama Nishiki’, which still makes for a very nice tree. ‘Nancy Ann’ is a beautiful lace leaf variety with wonderful color changes throughout the year that give the tree unique interest all the time. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Peve Stanley’ is a medium sized upright Japanese maple with a unique leaf shape. ‘Peve Stanley’ has deeply divided leaves that closely resemble that of lace leaf varieties. These leaves emerge red in the spring and turn very dark in the summer. ‘Peve Stanley’ has some of the darkest leaf color in the summer of any Japanese maple. In the fall, these leaves turn a bright red. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

In early spring the star shaped leaves emerge brilliant red with prominent veining before becoming darker and more of a brick red. 'Wattez' holds color well in to the summer even in hotter climates before turning first bronze and then green. Fall color is a wonderful bright red or orange sometimes having hints of gold. Although it is reported that this tree can get quite tall with age, it appears to be quite shrubby when young. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

With one of the most dissected leaves you will ever see on a Japanese maple 'Red Filigree Lace' has been a highly sought after "collectors plant" for many years. Originally propagated from a chance seedling by Will Curtis in Sherwood, Oregon, this plant will become an eye-catching topic of conversation in any garden.  Very pendulous the habit is mounding and very low unless staked or grafted on a standard. 'Red Filigree Lace' probably holds it' red color in summer in the Southeastern U.S. better than any red cultivar of Japanese maple. It does however require some shade. Amazingly it will hold its color even in somewhat shady conditions. Given perfect growing conditions it is not only a reliable plant but in some instances becomes quite vigorous. Unfortunately in hot climates it is very slow growing and is susceptible to over watering when young. In very early spring the delicate looking foliage is decidedly red becoming darker purple in summer before turning crimson in fall. Do not let the intricate finely cut lacy leaf fool you, as long as you provide a well-drained environment 'Red Filigree Lace' is a very sturdy and hardy plant that any gardener should feel lucky to have. Introduced by Talon Buchholz, 'Sweet Lorraine' has amazing lacy leaves with greens and pinks in the spring with its reticulation showing the dark green veining. After spring, leaves transition to a lighter green color and finally in fall, 'Sweet Lorraine' turns a bright yellow/orange color. Sweet Lorraine stays relatively small, only projected to reach about 4 feet or so.

Acer palmatum 'Harriet Waldman' is a fantastic variegated japanese maple that shows amazing pink and cream colors. At maturity, you can expect 'Harriet Waldman' to get to 10-12 feet tall and approximately 5 feet wide, making a great small tree shape. 

Acer palmatum 'Yeager Dwarf' probably also known as just 'Yeager' is a dwarf Japanese maple with a very low growing and dense habit. This Japanese maple shares many of the common characteristics of the "hime" type Japanese maples with the small green leaves, dense foliage, and flat topped growth habit. 'Yeager Dwarf' is a great dwarf Japanese maple for bonsai or small gardens. 10 Year Size: Height: 2-4 feet   Width: 4-6 feet
