Acer Palmatum Japanese Maples

The name, ‘Octopus’, aptly describes this cultivar with long aching branches that spread like tentacles in all directions. 'Octopus' forms a large spreading irregular mound. The deeply dissected leaves emerge a bright pink red in early spring before turning to dark purple. When summers heat arrives the leaves first bronze before becoming mostly dark green in hot climates. A very vigorous grower this maple has been around in Japan at least since 1882. With a name that means thunder 'Inazuma' really makes a statement in the garden as older trees can reach 25 feet or more in height and usually as wide or wider than tall. Spring color is purple and then it bronzes as summer approaches showing off the attractive green veining. Fall color varies between crimson red and a fiery orange red but is always spectacular. 10 Year Size:  Height 12-14 Feet Width 8-10 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Okushimo' was listed as early as 1710 in Japan. This old cultivar with a name that means pepper and salt, definitely has a place in the modern landscape. Leaves emerge chartreuse in spring with bright red petioles, before turning darker green and displaying cool little dimples all over the leaves. Its these dimples that reminded the Japanese of salt and pepper. Summer turns the leaves much darker and they begin to curl inward at the edges of the little sharp lobes. The distinctive green curled leaves of 'Okushimo' give it an ability to contrast just right with other plants in the garden and the fact that it is so decidedly vase shaped with most of its width above head height means that it can be tucked into corners and between paths or next to sidewalks. We do suggest that you plant 'Okushimo' in partial shade in hotter climates. The great fall color ranges from yellow to orange and even red. 10 Year size:  Height:  10-12  Feet    Width: 6-8 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer. This tree shows out once again in the fall with bright red foliage. ‘Dixie Spirit’ can handle full sun even in Georgia with minimal leaf burn. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Cosmos’ is one of the most heavily variegated Japanese maples in existence. ‘Cosmos’ has green leaves with splashes of pink and white all over them. This variegation is typically very consistent and persists even in the summer. Fall color is a vibrant orange. Not to be confused with ‘Radiant’, which was found as a sport off of ‘Cosmos’. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Great small maple that will grow  wider than tall, 'Tama hime' emerges in spring with orange tips to the leaves before turning green for the summer. Fall color ranges from bronze to orange. 10 year size: Height: 1-2 Feet   Width: 2-3 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Yama nishiki' Variegated Japanese Maple is an elegant upright Japanese maple known for its striking white reticulated leaves, which are intricately veined with green. This unique leaf pattern creates the effect of snow-covered mountain peaks, a nod to the tree's name, meaning "Snow Peak" in Japanese. This variegation is outstanding but is not always consistent and is not visible at all times throughout the year. During fall, the foliage transforms into vibrant shades of orange and red, adding seasonal interest. At maturity, Yama Nishiki typically grows to a height of 8 to 10 feet, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or landscapes where its delicate beauty can be appreciated.

Just like a Phoenix rises from the ashes, Acer palmatum ‘Phoenix’ rises out of dormancy with bright red leaves in the spring. This bright red color is especially contrasted by yellow-orange veining. ‘Phoenix’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples that all typically leaf out a spectacular red before turning green for most of the spring and summer. Like the rest of the maples in this group, ‘Phoenix’ will also often have red new growth in the summer to really contrast off of the green leaves. Acer palmatum ‘Sumi nagashi’ is a matsumurae type Japanese maple tree with deeply separated lobes and serrated leaves that will make a wonderful addition to any garden. Introduced in Japan in 1930, Sumi nagashi translates to village on the river bank. 'Sumi nagashi' is fast growing and will mature eloquently. Young trees grow vase shaped an upright, becoming much more rounded and full as they age. Leaves in spring will emerge sort of maroon but will be much more red than the purple color of varieties like 'Bloodgood'. As the heat of our southern summer starts to rise the foliage will first start to turn more red, then bronze before fading to green by mid-summer. Acer palmatum ‘Red Baron’ is a fantastic, red upright Japanese maple. The spring color of ‘Red Baron’ is a beautiful burgundy that holds extremely well into the summer even in hotter climates. ‘Red Baron’ then boasts an incredible red fall color. ‘Red Baron’ is a favorite not just because of its beautiful color, but also because of its heat tolerance and its ability to handle a great deal of sun. Not only can it handle full sun in even hot climates, it also can maintain a good bit of its color even in a shadier spot. ‘Red Baron’ is also a versatile tree because it doesn’t grow too large. ‘Red Baron’ is an outstanding red upright Japanese maple that is definitely one of our favorites. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum 'Asayake' is a dwarf lace leaf Japanese maple with yellow foliage in the spring. In addition to this incredible yellow color the leaves also have slight red edges. The leaves change to a light green in the summer. Fall color transitions from orange to bright red. 'Asayake' is a dwarf, pendulous tree that should form a low growing shrub at maturity. 'Takao' has been a favorite in Japan since 1690. Acer palmatum ‘Lima Gold’ is a dwarf Japanese maple with bright, lime-green foliage. This color holds pretty well into the summer. Fall color then ranges from bright yellow to orange. ‘Lima gold’ stays very small at maturity and maintains a dense shrubby habit. 10 Year Size: Height: 2-4 Width: 2-4
