Acer Palmatum Japanese Maples

Acer palmatum ‘Baton Rouge’ is an excellent, mid-sized coral bark Japanese maple. ‘Baton Rouge’ will not get as large as the popular ‘Sango kaku’, but grows nearly as fast. ‘Baton Rouge’ is also as heat tolerant as any other coral bark Japanese maple. ‘Baton Rouge’ will have traditional green leaves from spring through the summer. In the fall the leaves will turn to a bright yellow to orange before dropping for the winter. In the winter the bark will shine bright red. ‘Baton Rouge’ has exceptional bark color that will rival any coral bark Japanese maple variety. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Aka shigitatsu sawa’ has amazing early spring variegation. Almost the entire leaf will be cream with undertones of red and dark green veins. The leaves will turn green in the summer but the veins will be darker. 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' will not tolerate afternoon sun in hot climates but should be placed where it can get 3-4 hours of morning sun because light is required to get the red tones to show up. This plant is slow to mature but will turn into a small round topped tree that will be almost as wide as tall.  Synonymous with 'Beni shigitatsu sawa' 10 year size:   Height: 7-9 Feet   Width: 5-7 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Ryugu' is a very exciting variegated Japanese maple. 'Ryugu' has about as much variegation to the leaves as any other Japanese maple. The speckled white variegation is quite consistent and should persist year over year. The other thing that is so interesting about this Japanese maple is it's dwarf, compact growth habit. 'Ryugu' will stay quite small with a dense and compact habit. The leaves are green with mostly creamy white variegation speckled all over the leaves. When fall comes 'Ryugu' catches on fire with very bright orange-red color. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet   Width: 2-4 feet

Acer palmatum ‘First Ghost’ is another of the reticulated leaf form ghost series from Talon Buchholz. 'First Ghost' requires afternoon shade in most climates  and mostly shade in hotter areas. Growing more upright when young, with age it becomes as wide or wider than tall. 'First Ghost' boasts outstanding spring color that is predominately creamy white or yellow with dark veins and red margins. The variegation on 'First Ghost'  holds longer into the summer than any reticulated cultivar we grow. Acer palmatum 'Nishiki yamato' is a fast growing Japanese maple that develops rough rough bark similar to a pine tree as it ages. 'Nishiki yamato' has bright green leaves in the spring that darken to a solid green in the summer. These leaves then turn to a bright orange to red in the fall. 'Nishiki yamato' is a very fast growing tree and develops its rough bark quicker than many other rough bark Japanese maples as well. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 4-6 feet 

Acer palmatum ‘Ichigyoji’ is a green upright Japanese maple with large, broad leaves. ‘Ichigyoji’ is often considered the sister tree to ‘Osakazuki’ as they have many similarities including their large, broad leaves and bold, green color. ‘Ichigyoji’ also leafs out a pale orange color in the early spring similar to its sister, ‘Osakazuki’. The similarities don’t end with the leaves. The branching structures of these two trees are also similar in that ‘Ichigyoji’ shares ‘Osakazuki’s strong, stiff branches that give the tree an elegant shape that is endearing for a Japanese maple. The biggest difference in the two trees is the fall color. ‘Osakazuki’ is known for its bright reddish orange fall color that makes the tree look like it has been set ablaze. ‘Ichigyoji’ has a similarly stunning fall display, but it has a combination of yellows and oranges that create a vibrant, neon orange appearance. ‘Ichigyoji’ is a medium growing Japanese maple that should reach about 15 feet tall in 10 years.10 Year Size: Height: 14-16 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Frosted Purple’ is reticulated Japanese maple with outstanding color particularly in the spring. ‘Frosted Purple’ is similar to the Japanese maples in the “Ghost” series in that it has reticulated variegation and the unique, jagged edges to the leaves. ‘Frosted Purple’ comes out a very light purple color in the spring. This color is much brighter than that of ‘Purple Ghost’ or several other reticulated Japanese maples. This color dulls in the summer, but the reticulation typically holds. Probably the best variegated maple in our collection. New growth emerges as a show stopping collage of red, pink, orange, cream and green and holding these beautiful colors well into the summer before finally changing to a nice cream and green. Adding to the mystic is this approximate translation of Beni shichihenge, red variegated ghost that changes.  Fall color is a distinctive shade of orange. 'Beni shichihenge' grows as a beautiful vase shaped tree when young becoming more round topped with age. Acer palmatum ‘Japanese Princess’ is one of the most exciting dwarf Japanese maples in existence right now. ‘Japanese Princess’ is from the Mikawa Yatsabusa family, meaning that it has short internodal lengths on the branches which creates a stacking effect of the leaves. ‘Japanese Princess’ emerges with a bright red color to the leaves. The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. By summer, the color of the leaves fades to a light green color. Fall color is a bright orange to red. This mounding form of maple with adds a little something different to the garden. It is fairly rare to see a maple with this growth habit that does not have dissected leaves. Growing slightly upright when young 'Jiro shidare' which means white cascading soon becomes spreading and then quite pendulous with age. New leaves emerge with a pink cast in spring before quickly turning a nice medium green. Fall color is crimson red. 10 Year Size:  Height: 5-7 Feet Width: 6-8 Feet

Acer palmatum 'Sir Damon' is an excellent coral bark Japanese maple variety. The bark on 'Sir Damon' ranges from dark red on older branches to bright red on younger growth. This red bark color is most pronounced during the winter months. The leaves are light green in the spring and get a little darker in the summer. The light green spring color contrasts off the red bark very nicely. Fall color is a bright yellow. 'Sir Damon' is a great coral bark variety for someone that wants a coral bark Japanese maple but needs a shorter tree than the typical Sango kaku coral bark Japanese maple. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 4-6 feet
