Acer palmatum 'Hana matoi' is a variegated dwarf Japanese maple and is one of the most exciting Japanese Maples ever to hit the American market. The pink variegation is phenomenal especially in the spring. The variegation holds up well even in our hot climate and does not often revert like some other variegated varieties. The spring foliage emerges dark red with creamy white and pink variegation. As the temperatures rise heading into summer the base color changes from dark red to green but the wonderful pink and cream variegation remain all summer. In German, the name means Autumn fire and 'Herbstfeuer' certainly lives up to its name with its fiery red and orange colors in the fall. In spring, the large rounded leaves, held on red petioles, appear very light green with a white pubescence before turning dark green for summer. The growth habit is decidedly upright when young, becoming more rounded with age. Though listed as a palmatum there is some speculation that this may be a palmatum - circinatum cross.
