Acer palmatum 'Sister Ghost' emerges yellow with dark veins in early spring. Sometimes in early spring leaves have a slight pink cast. By summer foliage is mostly green with a few specks of yellow to let you know this plant was variegated. Fall color is orange with hints of yellow and red. Generally growing wider than tall this small tree does best in partial shade in all but the coolest areas. Introduced by Talon Buchholz as part of the ghost series.

Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' Variegated Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' is the famous "Floating Cloud" maple. In early spring dazzling foliage opens speckled with pink and white. In summer the pink fades leaving only a dusting of white to hint at its former spring glory. Unfortunately in areas with hotter climates the variegation is not nearly as well developed and some years does not show at all. Oh the anticipation of a gardener in a hot climate hoping each spring that this will be the year that his prized "Floating Cloud" will actually show its colors. If you do actually get to see variegation in early spring in these hot locations it is fleeting at best as it will fade to green quickly leaving the gardener waiting and wanting until next spring. Compact and upright when young 'Ukigumo' matures into a beautiful small round topped tree. Fall color is generally orange.
Our Ukigumos aren't showing much variegation this year but Ukigumo is notorious for having year to year variegation volatility. If you receive a Ukigumo without much variegation, it should variegate again in the future.

Deeply divided leaves appear light green in spring. Foliage turns slightly darker for summer. In fall the real show starts with orange, red and even yellow making an appearance. Acer palmatum ‘Hogyoku’ is an upright, green Japanese maple with very attractive foliage. 'Hogyoku' is mostly known for its pumpkin orange fall color. In warmer climates it sometimes has yellow leaves in the fall that have orange and red washed across them. Hogyoku matures into a compact stocky tree over time and is somewhat slower growing than other similar trees. The thick green leaves have a little flip or curve to the leaf margins giving the tree a wonderful texture that compliments almost any garden setting. Hogyoku tolerates full sun in all but the hottest climates. A perennial favorite introduced in Japan prior to 1882.

Acer palmatum ‘Beni Shien’ is possibly the most unique maple introduced in the last fifty years. Harold Johnson of Tallahassee, Alabama introduced this wonderful variegated Japanese maple born of the south and then gave it a Japanese name that translates to red smoke. The deeply divided leaves emerge more purple than anything else, but will have cream markings starting at the base of the leaf and extending along the margins of most of the lobes. In summer the purple of spring will change to olive green in more shade or bronze in more sun. In late summer new red growth will pop out all over the plant. Fall color is usually orange or red. The really cool thing is that no two leaves will be shaped the same.
