Acer palmatum 'Lightning' is a red Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves. The leaves of 'Lightning' are red to purple in the spring and turn to a greenish color in the summer. The leaves then turn bright yellow in the fall which is where it gets its name! 'Lightning' has a somewhat dense and shrubby habit. The leaf shape and structure of 'Lightning' give it contrast and differentiation from other red Japanese maple varieties. 'Lightning' is a moderately growing upright Japanese maple that should mature into a very attractive small to medium sized tree with a dense and shrubby look.

Acer shirasawanum 'Purple Umbrella' Full Moon Japanese Maple is a dwarf broadleaf Japanese maple that has large dark purpleish red leaves. Fall color could be anywhere from bright red to deep maroon coloring. It grows to around 8 feet tall and around 4 feet wide. It was named after the leaf color and shape when introduced by Crispin Silva from Crispin Creations.

‘Shojo Shidare’ does very well in hot climates. The spring color is purple and holds well into the summer even in Georgia. Fall color is almost scarlet and very strong. A fast growing, very pendulous dissectum, 'Shojo shidare' will mound into an excellent specimen in just a few years. 'Shojo shidare' is rare in the trade because it can be difficult to propogate, which is all the better for you collectors if you should be lucky enough to find one. This little maple with very fine dissected leaves is an excellent addition to any garden. Among dissectums only 'Red filigree Lace' and 'Beni komo no su' have finer foliage. 'Red Feathers' does seem to grow faster than it's fine leafed cousins. Starting very bright red in spring the foliage darkens with the heat of summer turning green in hot climates before putting on a wonderful crimson show in fall. Discovered in 1980 and introduced in 1995 by John Vermeullen and Sons nursery this plant was actually a seedling off of the original 'Burgundy Lace' (also a John Vermeullen and Sons introduction in 1945). During evaluation this plant was labeled Rilas Red and occasionally this plant will show up with this incorrect name, leading one to believe that some plants escaped the nursery before introduction.

This selection from Hefner's Nursery in Conover, NC is the latest edition to the better than 'Bloodgood' saga. Everyone is always looking for a 'Bloodgood' type tree that will tolerate sun and heat in hotter climates and stay red all summer long. 'Heffner's Red Select' is definitely better than 'Bloodgood' but as to whether or not this is the holy grail, the jury is still out. Either way this is a nice small round topped tree. Emerging bright red in spring, the foliage quickly turns a very dark burgundy. The dark color should hold well through summer in all but the hottest climates. Acer palmatum ‘Baby Ghost’ is the smallest of the “Ghost” series of reticulated Japanese maples. ‘Baby Ghost’ first leafs out with an amber color leaf that transitions to red. Leaves then fade to burgundy and ultimately to green which maintains throughout the summer. 'Cecilia' was found as a chance seedling from 'Tamukeyama' and shares many of the color characteristics with its parent plant. The leaves of 'Cecilia' are dark red becoming bright red in the fall. The dark red color and leaf shape of 'Cecilia' give it contrast and differentiation from other red Japanese maple varieties. 'Cecilia' should grow well and hold its color even in hotter sunnier climates. 'Cecilia' is a moderately growing upright Japanese maple that should mature into a very attractive small to medium sized tree perfect for nearly any yard.

Acer palmatum 'Kawahara Rose' is a beautiful corallinum type Japanese maple. 'Kawahara Rose' emerges in spring with a gorgeous rosy pinkish red color. These pinkish leaves then transition to orange and eventually green by summer. In late summer there is often a flush of new growth which is the rosy spring color that stands out beautifully on top of the older green foliage. Fall color for 'Kawahara Rose' is yellow to orange.

Acer palmatum 'Corallinum' represents a fine example of a whole group of similar maples that emerge salmon-pink to pinkish-red in spring. These 5 lobed semi dwarf trees are all known for there spectacular spring displays. More pink than 'Shinde shojo' or Beni maiko', Corallinum really stands out in the garden. Even the new stems and petioles are pink to red. Though a fantastic tree it tends to always be leggy in pots and never really fills in until planted in the ground for a couple of years. Also 'Corallinum is never as pink for us in the Southeast as it is for people in cooler climates. After turning green in early June we are usually treated to a second burst of color in August with the new flush of pinkish-red new leaves. Fall color is usually an orange-red to pink-red.

Listed in 1710 in Japan this old cultivar is a Japanese Favorite. The brilliant red of early spring quickly becomes a rich purple. Holding its color in to the summer even in hot climates this tree is also said to be very hardy in cooler areas. This is a fast growing upright maple with older specimens reaching 25 feet or more becoming more round topped with age. Fall brings on special appreciation as Musashino takes on a life of it on with brilliant cherry red color.
