Acer palmatum ‘Beni shidare’ is one of the most pendulous varieties we grow. It has deep purple red color in spring and maintains its color well into summer before turning bronze and then green. Fall color is bright red and striking. This is probably one of the oldest red dissectum forms, as the name simply means red cascading, at one time all red weeping forms were given this name. Over time a superior clone must have been selected and remains in production today. Acer shirasawanum ‘Purple Thunder’ is a full moon Japanese maple with dark purple leaves especially in the spring. These leaves fade to a burgundy in the summer. In the fall the leaves change to a bright red. ‘Purple Thunder’ has large leaves with long lobes that fold under themselves. The look is reminiscent of Acer palmatum ‘Trompenburg’ and not as extreme as Acer palmatum ‘Peve Starfish’. Acer palmatum ‘Japanese Princess’ is one of the most exciting dwarf Japanese maples in existence right now. ‘Japanese Princess’ is from the Mikawa Yatsabusa family, meaning that it has short internodal lengths on the branches which creates a stacking effect of the leaves. ‘Japanese Princess’ emerges with a bright red color to the leaves. The red is highlighted by white pubescence. The red color of the leaves quickly transitions to a yellowish orange which remains for the rest of the spring. Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ has very fine linearilobum foliage and a small compact growth habit. More gardeners should find a spot for 'Enkan' in the garden. In spring foliage emerges a deep wine color and holds its red into the summer very well. Fall color ranges from orange red to deep red. Some palmate leaves appear on new growth but older foliage is quite narrow. It is very interesting the way leaves seem to hang downward from the petioles. Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Rain’ is one of our newest introductions at Maple Ridge Nursery. ‘Dixie Rain’ has an interesting leaf shape for a broad leaf variety. The leaves are deeply divided making it almost appear as a cross between a broad leaf and a lace leaf. The growth habit is also unusual for most broad leaf varieties. While most broad leaves grow upright, with some exceptions, ‘Dixie Rain’ appears to spread rather than grow vertical. This variety is still in its infancy stage so we are still monitoring its growth. ‘Dixie Rain’ also has rather unique colors. ‘Dixie Rain’ will first emerge in early spring with orange-red leaves that quickly change to green. This green then remains through the rest of the spring and summer. The new growth that appears is also that orange-red color which gives the tree a striking contrast. Fall color is then yellow to orange, making ‘Dixie Rain’ a beautiful tree in the landscape.10 Year Size: Height: 5-7 feet Width: 5-7 feet

Acer palmatum 'Black Hole' is a Japanese maple with reticulated variegation similar to its parent, 'Purple Ghost'. 'Black Hole' has even darker foliage than 'Purple Ghost'. The reticulated veins are very prominent early in spring but fade as the foliage gets darker. The fall color of 'Black Hole' is dark red.

Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. Acer palmatum ‘Beni komachi’ is one of the most unique Japanese maples in existence. The name means red beautiful little girl, and aptly describes this attractive maple. Emerging foliage in spring is red but turns to a dark purple fairly quick. As the summer heat approaches the small crinkled leaves turn a very nice dark green but remain edged in purple giving this plant one of the most unique textures in the garden. 'Beni komachi' is slow growing but will eventually grow into a small tree. Fast growing stems with large atypical leaves should be removed. ‘Shojo Shidare’ does very well in hot climates. The spring color is purple and holds well into the summer even in Georgia. Fall color is almost scarlet and very strong. A fast growing, very pendulous dissectum, 'Shojo shidare' will mound into an excellent specimen in just a few years. 'Shojo shidare' is rare in the trade because it can be difficult to propogate, which is all the better for you collectors if you should be lucky enough to find one. With one of the most dissected leaves you will ever see on a Japanese maple 'Red Filigree Lace' has been a highly sought after "collectors plant" for many years. Originally propagated from a chance seedling by Will Curtis in Sherwood, Oregon, this plant will become an eye-catching topic of conversation in any garden. Very pendulous the habit is mounding and very low unless staked or grafted on a standard. 'Red Filigree Lace' probably holds it' red color in summer in the Southeastern U.S. better than any red cultivar of Japanese maple. It does however require some shade. Amazingly it will hold its color even in somewhat shady conditions. Given perfect growing conditions it is not only a reliable plant but in some instances becomes quite vigorous. Unfortunately in hot climates it is very slow growing and is susceptible to over watering when young. In very early spring the delicate looking foliage is decidedly red becoming darker purple in summer before turning crimson in fall. Do not let the intricate finely cut lacy leaf fool you, as long as you provide a well-drained environment 'Red Filigree Lace' is a very sturdy and hardy plant that any gardener should feel lucky to have.
