Acer palmatum ‘Sherwood Flame’ was selected by Will Curtis of Sherwood, Oregon from a seedling of 'Burgundy Lace', 'Sherwood Flame is an excellent addition to any garden. I have read many descriptions of this plant written by authors who consider this cultivar very similar to its parent. I have to respectfully disagree. At least in our climate this plant is very different. In early spring 'Sherwood Flame' may be quite purple like its parent but the rest of the year it appears much more red than burgundy. One of the older dissectums in cultivation in Europe having been grown for well over 100 years. It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease. Emerging green dusted with red in shady areas to a rusty red in more sun, 'Ornatum' forms a large graceful shrub when mature. While very heat tolerant 'Ornatum' does prefer light shade in hot climates. Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer. Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. One named in England, and selected from the Exbury gardens around 1990 and this one, the original Japanese clone, dating back to at least 1882 in Japan. Like the Exbury version, the name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The new leaves appear a soft brick red in early spring but become darker red in a sunny location. In summer leaves first go bronze and then olive green. this happens more quickly in hot climates. 'Chitose yama' becomes a large almost prostrate or even gently cascading shrub usually wider than tall. Acer palmatum 'Scolopenrifolium rubrum' is a great red linearlobum type Japanese maple that is often confused with some of the other linearlobum varieties and maybe even used as a catch all name for red linearlobum plants. Our cultivar however is very distinct. The long narrow lobs are somewhat wider than plants like Red Pygmy but more narrow than 'Beni otake'. It is definitely different than 'Atrolineare' but may be synonymous with Keiser. While the overall growth tends to be slow and bushy sometimes new limbs can grow three or 4 feet in just a few weeks. These limbs are generally unattractive and should be pruned. The spring color is a very attractive dark red holding into well summer before turning bronze. Fall color is wonderful and often described as raspberry red.

Acer palmatum ‘Beni komachi’ is one of the most unique Japanese maples in existence. The name means red beautiful little girl, and aptly describes this attractive maple. Emerging foliage in spring is red but turns to a dark purple fairly quick. As the summer heat approaches the small crinkled leaves turn a very nice dark green but remain edged in purple giving this plant one of the most unique textures in the garden. 'Red Pygmy' may not be the best named linearilobum but it is one of the best all around Japanese Maples. Although slower growing than some of the vigorous forms of linearilobum, 'Red Pygmy' can attain heights of more than 15 feet with age. While it comes out red in spring and may hold color into the summer in some areas, 'Red Pygmy' quickly turns green as temperatures begin to rise in hot climates. The green is a dark rich green throughout the summer then as a startling contrast this plant will turn bright yellow or gold in fall. 'Red Pygmy ' leaves have some of the narrowest lobes of the red linearilobums often having an interesting twist in the lobe. 'Red Pygmy' tolerates sun well. This little maple with very fine dissected leaves is an excellent addition to any garden. Among dissectums only 'Red filigree Lace' and 'Beni komo no su' have finer foliage. 'Red Feathers' does seem to grow faster than it's fine leafed cousins. Starting very bright red in spring the foliage darkens with the heat of summer turning green in hot climates before putting on a wonderful crimson show in fall. Discovered in 1980 and introduced in 1995 by John Vermeullen and Sons nursery this plant was actually a seedling off of the original 'Burgundy Lace' (also a John Vermeullen and Sons introduction in 1945). During evaluation this plant was labeled Rilas Red and occasionally this plant will show up with this incorrect name, leading one to believe that some plants escaped the nursery before introduction.

This selection from Hefner's Nursery in Conover, NC is the latest edition to the better than 'Bloodgood' saga. Everyone is always looking for a 'Bloodgood' type tree that will tolerate sun and heat in hotter climates and stay red all summer long. 'Heffner's Red Select' is definitely better than 'Bloodgood' but as to whether or not this is the holy grail, the jury is still out. Either way this is a nice small round topped tree. Emerging bright red in spring, the foliage quickly turns a very dark burgundy. The dark color should hold well through summer in all but the hottest climates.
