‘Beni maiko’ means red dancing girl. Emerging foliage in spring is brilliant fire engine red turning pinkish before turning totally green by late May in Georgia. In spring it is hard to distinguish this cultivar from others like 'Shin de shojo' or 'Shishio Improved'. It probably does not hold its color as long as either of these cultivars but in summer after turning completely green it does something unique. The second season growth on mature plants will come out puckered. dark scarlet red with green veins and the lobes of the small odd leaves will sometimes be very strangely shaped. 'Beni maiko' has a very graceful habit, starting off as openly vase shaped when young becomig more round topped with age. Fall color is usually orange.

Acer palmatum ‘Fall’s Fire’ is a fantastic small, upright Japanese maple with unique leaves that will add a different texture to the garden. ‘Fall’s Fire’ has much smaller leaves than most upright varieties and the leaves are deeply serrated, creating an almost lace leaf look to the foliage. ‘Fall’s Fire’ has beautiful green leaves throughout the spring and summer, but it unsurprisingly gets its name from the fall color. Acer palmatum ‘Hogyoku’ is an upright, green Japanese maple with very attractive foliage. 'Hogyoku' is mostly known for its pumpkin orange fall color. In warmer climates it sometimes has yellow leaves in the fall that have orange and red washed across them. Hogyoku matures into a compact stocky tree over time and is somewhat slower growing than other similar trees. The thick green leaves have a little flip or curve to the leaf margins giving the tree a wonderful texture that compliments almost any garden setting. Hogyoku tolerates full sun in all but the hottest climates. A perennial favorite introduced in Japan prior to 1882.

Acer palmatum 'Ikandi' Variegated Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Ikandi’ is an extremely variegated Japanese maple discovered as a chance seedling from Acer palmatum ‘Alpenweiss’ by Talon Buchholz. The leaves on ‘Ikandi emerge almost entirely pink before the green and white develop around the veins. The pink variegation fades to green and creamy white by summer time and eventually will turn orange to red in the fall. ‘Ikandi’ needs to be protected from the hot afternoon sun, but morning or dappled sun help to provide excellent color to the variegated leaves in the spring. Variegated leaves on ‘Ikandi’ develop more as it matures, so be patient with this one and you will reap the beautiful benefits in the long run. ‘Ikandi’ will grow into a small to medium sized tree that should only reach eight to ten feet tall at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet
Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' Variegated Japanese Maple

Developed by Koichiro Wada Nursery, Japan before 1938 'Butterfly' has striking variegation. Frequent pruning is recommended to thin inner branching as it gets older, in order to prevent it from becoming to congested. Fall color is orange. There does appear to be two different cultivars being sold under the name 'Butterfly', while they are similar there is enough difference to indicate that they are distinctively different cultivars. One has pink and yellow variegation in early spring while the other one is pink and creamy white. Later in the season the variegation in both appear white. Butterfly does better in partial shade and in warmer climates the pink fades as summer temperatures rise.

Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Ex bury) Rare Japanese Maple

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. The original, a red clone from Japan dating back to the list of 1882 and this one, a green clone, named at Ex bury gardens in England around 1990. The name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Since this tree has no legitimate claim to the name being second, we refer to it as Chitose yama "Ex bury form". All that aside, this is a wonderful tree. Good enough to win the Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merritt in 1993. In early spring the leaves emerge a distinctive pale green with red tips covered with a white pubescence. If this weren't striking enough the entire tree is usually covered with an abundance of beautiful little red blooms. As temperatures warm and summer approaches the heavily textured leaves turn olive green complimented by the now ripe red samaras adorning the tree. As if all this were not enough, the real show starts in fall when this form of Chitose yama turns a traffic stopping bright red that literally glows. Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' is the famous "Floating Cloud" maple. In early spring dazzling foliage opens speckled with pink and white. In summer the pink fades leaving only a dusting of white to hint at its former spring glory. Unfortunately in areas with hotter climates the variegation is not nearly as well developed and some years does not show at all. Oh the anticipation of a gardener in a hot climate hoping each spring that this will be the year that his prized "Floating Cloud" will actually show its colors. If you do actually get to see variegation in early spring in these hot locations it is fleeting at best as it will fade to green quickly leaving the gardener waiting and wanting until next spring.
