In spring, Acer palmatum 'Higasa yama' may be one of the most exciting and colorful trees you will ever see, there is nothing else quite like it. Unfortunately this intense color is short lived. As soon as temperatures start to get hot most of the variegation will fade away leaving a faint white or cream line down the center of the lobe. And when it gets really hot in our southeastern summers it will go totally green. In late summer 'Higasa yama' will send out long runners of new growth with solid green leaves much larger and differently shaped than the typical leaves. These limbs will usually put out typical leaves the next spring if not they should be removed. Very similar to 'Sango kaku' but smaller, 'Winter Flame' can vary greatly under different growing conditions. If stressed this little guy hardly grows at all and can be a little finicky. If happy in its environment it can actually grow fairly quick although still a good bit slower than 'Sango kaku'. We find that giving it well drained soil and adequate moisture is the key to happiness for this little maple. Spring color is lime green becoming darker in summer and then yellow to orange and yellow in fall. Acer palmatum 'Rikuzen shidare' Weeping Japanese Maple

'Rikuzen shidare' has a weeping habit and grows similarly to Ryu sei. It will only grow as tall as it is staked and will weep down to the ground from there. Where it differs from Ryusei is in it's stunning large leaves. The leaves on Rikuzen shidare have a similar shape to an upright grower called 'Osakazuki'. Fall color on Rikuzen shidare is also different from Ryusei as it goes yellow in the fall verses red.
