Acer palmatum 'Koyuki' Snowflake Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Koyuki' is a very interesting Japanese maple with an unusual leaf shape. This cultivar should not be confused with the reticulated variety by the same name. 'Koyuki' has green leaves with rounded lobes. These leaves turn a reddish orange color in the fall.
There is a similar variety called 'Koyamandi nishiki' that is known as the snowflake maple. 'Koyuki' translates to little snowflake which makes sense as these are two of the only varieties with this sort of rounded leaf shape.

At one time all green dissectums were probably called 'Ao shidare' but over time this cultivar became dominant and rightly so. Growth is very strong and pendulous. Ao shidare will tolerate full sun better than most green dissectum cultivars but could still benefit from some shade in hotter climates. 'Rikuzen shidare' has a weeping habit and grows similarly to Ryu sei. It will only grow as tall as it is staked and will weep down to the ground from there.
