Green Japanese Maples

Acer palmatum 'Corallinum' represents a fine example of a whole group of similar maples that emerge salmon-pink to pinkish-red in spring. These 5 lobed semi dwarf trees are all known for there spectacular spring displays. More pink than 'Shinde shojo' or Beni maiko', Corallinum really stands out in the garden. Even the new stems and petioles are pink to red. Though a fantastic tree it tends to always be leggy in pots and never really fills in until planted in the ground for a couple of years. Also 'Corallinum is never as pink for us in the Southeast as it is for people in cooler climates. After turning green in early June we are usually treated to a second burst of color in August with the new flush of pinkish-red new leaves.  Acer palmatum ‘Yellow Bird’ is a beautiful and wildly under utilized Japanese maple. With lightly serrated leaves and an attractive upright growth habit, ‘Yellow Bird’ is a wonderful Japanese maple all year round. “Yellow Bird’ leafs out light green in spring before maturing to darker green leaves by summer time. Fall is when ‘Yellow Bird’ really starts to stand out. ‘Yellow Bird’ starts off yellow, then turns to golden with orange to red splattered across the leaves. These leaves will eventually turn completely red before eventually falling off. ‘Yellow Bird’ is a truly remarkable Japanese maple for fall color.10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Uzen nishiki’ is one of the very best variegated Japanese maples. In the spring, the foliage is splashed with an array of pinks and whites and greens. This extreme variegation even holds rather well into the summer. ‘Uzen nishiki’ is a fast, strong grower but you will want to provide it with some shade especially in the afternoon to help maintain the best colors. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Tom Thumb’ is a dwarf Japanese maple with ‘Mikawa yatsabusa’ lineage. ‘Tom Thumb’ stays very small and compact with the typical leaves of ‘Mikawa yatsabusa’. ‘Tom Thumb’ has more of a shrubby, rounded habit compared to others in the same family. ‘Tom Thumb’ comes out lime green in the spring before darkening to a dark green in the summer. Acer palmatum 'Oto hime' is a dwarf Japanese maple with small leaves that emerge almost yellow in spring tipped with red edges. In summer foliage turns a nice even green. Fall color is generally orange but sometimes red or yellow. This wonderful little tree was named after Queen Otohime a mermaid queen who ruled a fabled kingdom at the bottom of the sea. The name means little queen and the name is perfect for this little queen of the garden. 10 Year Size: Height:  2-3 Feet    Width:  3-4 Feet

'Murasaki kiyohime' is a small maple that will grow much wider than tall,  Like it's close relative 'Kiyo hime' this cultivar emerges in spring with red tips to the leaves before turning green for the summer. there are very slight differences between the 2 maples. We find that the edge of 'Murasaki kiyohime' to be more maroon red and 'Kiyo hime' to be more orange red but the tint of these colors can be affected by the sun making them hard to  distinguish. Fall color ranges from bronze to orange. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is also slightly more upright when young, often sending up  vertical shoots of a foot or more on very young plants only to spend the rest of it's life thickening up and growing wider. 'Murasaki kiyohime' is relatively fast growing and will become a specimen in the garden after just a few years.10 year size: Height: 2 feet   Width: 4-5 feet    

Acer palmatum ‘Koto maru’ is a fast growing dwarf Japanese maple. ‘Koto maru’ has very small, rounded leaves that emerge in the spring yellow with a red-oranges border. The coloring of the leaves really puts on a show in the spring. The leaves then fade to a light green throughout the summer. Fall color is then orange to red. ‘Koto maru’ will have long shoots of new growth while it is young, but it will develop into a dense, shrubby tree at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 3-5 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Green Spider’ is a very nice green lace leaf with a very pendulous habit. Leaves emerge light green in the spring and hold an attractive green color throughout the summer. The leaves then turn from orange to red in the fall. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 3-5 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Killarney’ is a nice broad leaf Japanese maple that has more of a spreading habit than the majority of broad leaf Japanese Maples. ‘Killarney’ has deeply divided leaves that emerge light green in spring. These leaves mature to a darker green for most of the summer. Fall color is an outstanding yellow and orange. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6

Acer palmatum 'Shidiva Gold' is a smaller form of 'Aoyagi'. 'Shidiva Gold' is known for its bright green foliage, green bark, and compact structure. The leaves of 'Shidiva Gold' emerge in the spring with a bright, chartreuse green color that only slightly fades into a light green in the summer. Acer palmatum 'Cupid' is a dwarf coral bark Japanese maple that was discovered as a witches broom from a large coral bark Japanese maple. 'Cupid' has all of the usual characteristics of a coral bark Japanese maple with red bark in the winter time and green leaves in the spring and summer. The fall color of 'Cupid' is bright yellow to orange. 'Cupid' grows with a compact and dense nature and will only develop into a dwarf tree at maturity. 'Cupid' is an excellent coral bark Japanese maple for anyone interested in adding a coral bark Japanese maple to their garden, but they are concerned with the space that a traditional 'Sango kaku' coral bark Japanese maple requires. 10 Year Size: Height: 5-6 feet   Width: 3-5 feet
