Grafted Trees

Acer palmatum ‘Rock Star’ was discovered as a chance seedling from Acer palmatum ‘Ornatum’ by Frank Brannon in Atlanta, GA and has been cultivated here at Maple Ridge Nursery. ‘Rock Star’ emerges with stunningly bright red leaves in early spring which darken to a dark maroon color later in spring. The leaves fade to a green in summer before turning to a vibrant array of reds, yellows, and oranges in the fall. ‘Rock Star’ is a strong grower here in the south, but should still be shielded from the hot afternoon sun. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Okken’s Red Mini’ is an extremely small growing Japanese maple with very nice red color in the spring. The red color darkens in the summer, then turns back to a bright red in the fall. ‘Okken’s Red Mini’ stays so small, it can basically be used for any space in the landscape. 10 Year Size: Height: 2-3 feet Width: 2-3 feet

This is another of the cork bark maples highly prized by bonsai enthusiast. 'Ibo nishiki' means "warty bark", however the fissures in the bark of this small tree do not appear as deep as in some other rough bark varieties such as 'Nishi gawa' or 'Arakawa'. This gives the bark of 'Ibo nishiki' a more subtle appearance.  Like many other rough bark varieties it usually takes several years for the warty bark to start to appear. Fall color varies from year to year but is normally a beautiful mix of yellow, orange and even red.10 Tear size:  Height:12-14 Feet Width: 10-12 Feet

This special little witches broom is distinguished by the cool orange and yellow color of new growth. As the new growth hardens it changes to a very appealing green. This process continues all year as this amazing little tree seems to put up brightly colored tufts of new growth through much of the summer. Fall color is yellow and orange Another neat feature of 'Hickory Hollow' is the irregular shaped leaves. Some leaves curve inward and have long serrated center lobes that appear quite rigid. While other leaves have the truncated center lobes like one would expect from a witches broom,Discovered by Mike and Ken Yeager of Hickory Hollow Landscapers in Tuxedo NY this great small plant was originally named 'Yeager'. Having found the original plant around 1992 the brothers, both avid plantsmen, grew the plant for many years before introducing it as 'Hickory Hollow'.10 Year Size: Height: 3-4 Feet Width: 4-5 Feet

With a name that translates to flower viewing you would think 'Hanmi nishiki' would blow you away with color and beauty. 'Hanami nishiki' delivers on the promise for a few weeks in early spring with red edges to the emerging light green leaves. For the rest of the summer it becomes a densely twiggy shrub type maple almost round, slightly taller than wide. Fall color is yellow to orange.   10 year size: Height: 3-4 Feet   Width: 3-4 Feet  

A dwarf pink variegated maple with irregularly shaped leaves originally from New Zealand, 'Geisha' is perfect for maple fanatics and casual gardeners alike. In spring leaves emerge a stunning pink often with green spots and sometimes with odd misshapen partially purple leaves. In summer the leaves change to green with cream markings. Fall color is orange. 'Geisha' requires protection from hot afternoon sun. 10 year size:  Height: 8-10Feet   Width: 6-8 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Felice’ is a slow growing, weeping Japanese maple with wide, deeply cut leaves. ‘Felice’ leafs out in the spring with green leaves that have an orangish hue. These leaves turn to a solid green in the summer. Fall color is a very nice orange. ‘Felice’ is a slow growing tree with a strong weeping habit, so it never gets very big.10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Fukinagashi’ is a delicate little linearlobum that may be the most unique Japanese maple in the category. The leaves of ‘Fukinagashi’ emerge in spring dark burgundy, almost black. ‘Fukinagashi’ also has some of the smallest and finest leaves of any linearlobum, which makes it a very interesting tree in the spring. However, unlike most Japanese maples, ‘Fukinagashi’ may be as interesting in the summer as it is in spring. By summertime, the leaves of ‘Fukinagashi’ turns a bright green. The bark of ‘Fukinagashi’ is also a dark almost black color. This contrasts excellently off the bright green leaves, making the leaves appear even brighter. The leaves then turn red in the fall. ‘Fukinagashi’ is a small growing linearlobum Japanese maple that can really fit into any area in the landscape provided it is protected from afternoon sun.10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 2-4 feet

Acer buergerianum ‘Michael Steinhardt’ is a golden trident maple with exceptional yellow color. This yellow color is brightest in the spring but holds very well throughout the summer. Fall color for ‘Michael Steinhardt’ is a vibrant orange to red. ‘Michael Steinhardt’ is a vigorous growing trident maple that will reach 10-12 feet at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Eimini’ is a dwarf Japanese Maple with small green leaves. These leaves turn an attractive orange in the fall. ‘Eimini’ will form a dense shrub at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 2-4 feet Width: 2-4 feet

This cultivar introduced by the late great plantsman Henry Hohman of Kingsville Nursery in Kingsville Maryland has large rounded leaves typical of other japonicums. This cultivar should be planted in partial shade especially in hot climates as it tends to burn in full sun. This vigorous grower forms a nice round topped tree. Older specimens can reach 20 to 25 feet. Fall color is red, and orange. 10 Year Size: Height:  10-12 Feet    Width:  8-10 Feet

‘Gossamer’ is reportedly a cross between Acer japonicum and Acer palmatum dissectum. This cultivar should probably be listed as Acer japonicum x palmatum 'Gossamer' if this is the case. I have not seen it listed that way. No matter what you call it this is one cool little tree and deserves more attention. Very slow growing when young eventually reaching 10 feet or more with age. The deeply divided foliage almost appears linearilobum like. Acer palmatum ‘Briella’s Broom’ has wonderful color and uniquely shaped leaves that make this little tree a must have for casual gardeners and collectors alike. This introduction from New England is a solid dependable grower slightly faster than 'Shaina' or 'Kandy Kitchen'.10 year size: Height: 4-5 feet   Width: 3-4 feet  

Introduced by Billy Schwartz of Green Mansions Nursery, 'Baby Lace' was the first witches broom discovered on a dissectum. The leaves are small, intricate and just about as finely dissected as 'Red Filigree Lace' only much more irregular. In spring the color is astounding, with pink, red and green all mixed together but as the new growth hardens off the color quickly becomes a solid light green.  Fall color is a nice mix of yellows, oranges and reds. Although 'Baby Lace' is a highly sought after cultivar, it is hard to find in the trade due to the fact that it is rather slow growing and can be difficult to propagate.10 Year Size:  Height:  2-4 Feet    Width:  3-5 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Abigail Rose’ is a dwarf Japanese maple with variegated foliage similar to Higasayama. The variegation on ‘Abigail Rose’ is a little more red and hot pink than the lighter pinks of Higasayama. ‘Abigail Rose’ will grow into a short dense shrub that needs to be protected from the hot afternoon sun.
