Grafted Trees

Discovered as a chance seedling by J.R.P. van Hoey Smith this distinctive cultivar bears the name of the arboretum where it was discovered. This fast growing cultivar tends to be mostly vase shaped for many years, although very old specimens begin to get more broad with age. The 3 things for which Trompenburg is most famous all have to do with the foliage. The first is the spring color which is a dark purple sometimes almost appearing brown or chocolate turning more red as summer begins but holding a nice color well into even an Atlanta summer. The second is the very sharp serrations to the lobes of the leaf. The third is the way the lobes curl at the ends, but this does not always appear until the tree somewhat matures.  Trompenburg will tolerate full Sun even in the south. Fall color is a brilliant scarlet red. There is some speculation that 'Trompenburg' may have shirasawanum parentage due to the fact that the samaras are held erect. 10 Year Size: Height:  15-18 Feet    Width: 10-14 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Asahi zuru’ is a medium sized Japanese maple with intense variegation. This tree is splashed with pinks and whites and greens. These colors are similar but more consistent than the classic ‘Oridino nishiki’. ‘Asahi zuru’ will have occasional pink striations on the bark. Like most variegated varieties, ‘Asahi zuru’ should be planted in part shade for the best color, or at least given protection from the hot afternoon sun. Height 10-12 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Atrolineare’ is known for its long, thin leaves giving it the nickname “ribbon leaf”. ‘Atrolineare’ emerges a nice red in the spring before darkening to a burgundy in the summer. ‘Atrolineare’ then puts on a nice display of bright red fall color. ‘Atrolineare’ is an upright growing Japanese maple, but it does not get that tall. It will have somewhat of a bushy habit as it reaches no more than 10 feet tall at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Wdith: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum 'Scolopenrifolium rubrum' is a great red linearlobum type Japanese maple that is often confused with some of the other linearlobum varieties and maybe even used as a catch all name for red linearlobum plants. Our cultivar however is very distinct. The long narrow lobs are somewhat wider than plants like Red Pygmy but more narrow than 'Beni otake'. It is  definitely different than 'Atrolineare' but may be synonymous with Keiser. While the overall growth tends to be slow and bushy sometimes new limbs can grow three or 4 feet in just a few weeks. These limbs are generally unattractive and should be pruned. The spring color is a very attractive dark red holding into well summer before turning bronze. Fall color is  wonderful and often described as raspberry red. 10 year size:  Height: 8-10 Feet   Width: 5-7 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Tess’ is a green upright variety with much smaller leaves than most upright varieties. ‘Tess’ is a fast growing Japanese maple that should reach 12 feet tall at maturity. ‘Tess’ has attractive green foliage that can actually even handle a little bit of sun. Fall color is a vibrant orange. ‘Tess’ is a fairly new, rare variety that is quite hard to find.10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet Width: 4-6 feet

One of the older dissectums in cultivation in Europe having been grown for well over 100 years. It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease.  Emerging green dusted with red in shady areas to a rusty red in more sun, 'Ornatum' forms a large graceful shrub when mature. While very heat tolerant 'Ornatum' does prefer light shade in hot climates. The unusual thing is that this plant is one of the few red dissectums that turns orange or even yellow-orange in fall.10 Year Size:  Height: 4-6 Feet    Width 6-8 Feet

A very vigorous large growing Australian cultivar that is more upright when young becoming more spreading with age. Spring color is bright red, holding well into summer before turning bronze or green.  As this plant always seems to be growing, the gardener will be delighted to have fresh bright red shoots practically all summer long. Lionheart is also one of the most sun and heat tolerant dissectums, even in hot climates. Fall color is brilliant red and long lasting. 10 years Size Height 8-10 Feet Width 8-10 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. The growth habit is still something we are evaluating, but thus far to have a rather unique shape while becoming the same size as most other Japanese maples in this category. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Alpine Sunrise’ is a dwarf Japanese maple that emerges in spring with bright red foliage. This color fades somewhat in the summer before the leaves change back to a bright red in the fall. ‘Alpine Sunrise’ has a dense shrubby habit commensurate with most witches broom varieties.10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Foliage on this japonicum emerges light green in spring becoming darker in summer. This vigorous grower forms a nice round topped tree. Older specimens can reach 25 to 30 feet. Fall color is a wonderful blend of red, yellow and orange. 10 Year Size: Height: 12-14 Feet Width: 8-10 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Tsuma gaki’ is the famous "Red Fingernails" Japanese maple gets this name from the bright red tips on the light green almost yellow newly emerging leaves. This color persists throughout the spring fading to a nice dark green by summer. Fall color is bright red. Acer palmatum ‘Beni musume’ is a striking dwarf Japanese maple known for its constantly changing foliage and exceptional seasonal interest. In spring, new growth emerges a beautiful pink-red that quickly softens to bronze tones, then matures to a fresh yellow-green as the season progresses. Through summer, the leaves retain a lively blush of red, pink, orange, or gold over green, giving the tree a glowing, multicolored look. In fall, ‘Beni musume’ truly shines, turning a bright golden yellow accented with red at the tips of the branches. It's truly a distinctive, eye-catching display. The medium-sized palmate leaves and naturally bushy form make it an excellent choice for small gardens, containers, or as a colorful landscape focal point. A dwarf grower, ‘Beni musume’ reaches approximately 5–7 feet in 15 years and performs best in partial shade, particularly in summer. 

Acer shirasawanum 'Royalty' is a red full moon Japanese maple. Unlike most full moon Japanese maples with their large, rounded leaves, 'Royalty' has very long, narrow leaves. These leaves are dark red in the spring and very attractive. Summer typically turns the leaves to a yellowish green. Fall color ranges from yellow to orange to red. 'Royalty' is a very nice upright growing tree that is quickly becoming a favorite here at the nursery. 'Royalty' will grow into a small to medium sized tree, perfect for most landscapes. 10 Year Size: Height: 10-12 feet   Width: 6-8 feet

Pinus strobus 'Elkin's Dwarf' is a dwarf Eastern White Pine with a very dense and compact habit. The foliage on 'Elkin's Dwarf' is an attractive blue, green color.
