Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. The growth habit is still something we are evaluating, but thus far to have a rather unique shape while becoming the same size as most other Japanese maples in this category. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Alpine Sunrise’ is a dwarf Japanese maple that emerges in spring with bright red foliage. Acer palmatum 'Fjellheim' is a coral bark Japanese maple that came from Acer palmatum 'Sango kaku' as a witches broom. 'Fjellheim' displays the same amazing bark color as 'Sango kaku' but stays much smaller. At maturity, 'Fjellheim' will only reach around 5 feet in height and is more compact than 'Sango kaku' making it a great pop of color for any small garden.

Acer palmatum ‘Kaga kujaku’ is an upright growing Japanese maple with deeply divided leaves. The leaves emerge a bright pinkish red early in spring. These leaves then quickly transition to an attractive green that maintains throughout the summer. ‘Kaga kujaku’ then changes to orange-red in the fall. ‘Kaga kujaku’ is a fairly fast growing tree that will reach about 10 feet tall at maturity.10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer. This tree shows out once again in the fall with bright red foliage. ‘Dixie Spirit’ can handle full sun even in Georgia with minimal leaf burn. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Atrolineare’ is known for its long, thin leaves giving it the nickname “ribbon leaf”. ‘Atrolineare’ emerges a nice red in the spring before darkening to a burgundy in the summer. ‘Atrolineare’ then puts on a nice display of bright red fall color. ‘Atrolineare’ is an upright growing Japanese maple, but it does not get that tall. Acer palmatum 'Chitose yama' (Japanese Version) Rare Japanese Maple

Unfortunately, there are two trees grown with the name 'Chitose yama'. One named in England, and selected from the Exbury gardens around 1990 and this one, the original Japanese clone, dating back to at least 1882 in Japan. Like the Exbury version, the name refers to the mountains near the town of Chitose on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The new leaves appear a soft brick red in early spring but become darker red in a sunny location. In summer leaves first go bronze and then olive green. this happens more quickly in hot climates. 'Chitose yama' becomes a large almost prostrate or even gently cascading shrub usually wider than tall. One of the older dissectums in cultivation in Europe having been grown for well over 100 years. It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease. Emerging green dusted with red in shady areas to a rusty red in more sun, 'Ornatum' forms a large graceful shrub when mature. While very heat tolerant 'Ornatum' does prefer light shade in hot climates. Acer palmatum 'Scolopenrifolium rubrum' is a great red linearlobum type Japanese maple that is often confused with some of the other linearlobum varieties and maybe even used as a catch all name for red linearlobum plants. Our cultivar however is very distinct. The long narrow lobs are somewhat wider than plants like Red Pygmy but more narrow than 'Beni otake'. It is definitely different than 'Atrolineare' but may be synonymous with Keiser. While the overall growth tends to be slow and bushy sometimes new limbs can grow three or 4 feet in just a few weeks. These limbs are generally unattractive and should be pruned. The spring color is a very attractive dark red holding into well summer before turning bronze. Fall color is wonderful and often described as raspberry red.

Acer palmatum 'Matsugae' Variegated Japanese Maple

We find 'Matsugae' to be a very dependable variegated cultivar in the southeast. In spring it opens with cream and rose markings along its irregular shaped medium green leaves. In summer the rose color fades away and the cream turns pure white leaving beautifully contrasting variegation all summer long. Red petioles also add to the overall appearance of 'Matsugae'. This is a very old cultivar with a name that means 'the pine branch' which is hard to understand for a variegated cultivar. This plant is similar to 'Kagiri nishiki' but is faster growing and has better variegation. Fall color is usually orange.

Acer palmatum ‘Tess’ is a green upright variety with much smaller leaves than most upright varieties. ‘Tess’ is a fast growing Japanese maple that should reach 12 feet tall at maturity. ‘Tess’ has attractive green foliage that can actually even handle a little bit of sun.
