Acer Palmatum Japanese Maples

Acer palmatum 'Mon zukushi' is a fantastic Japanese maple that has large green leaves in the spring and summer. These leaves then turn to a bright orange-red in the fall. 'Mon zukushi' has a sturdy branch structure and develops into a beautifully shaped tree at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet   Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Sagara nishiki’ is a variegated Japanese maple with excellent yellow variegation splashed all over the foliage. The yellow variegation is more strongly concentrated along the edges of the leaves but there can be specks and splashes all over some leaves. The base color of this variegated tree is a light green in the spring and a darker green in the summer. Fall color is yellow to orange. 10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 4-6 feet

‘Shojo Shidare’ does very well in hot climates. The spring color is purple and holds well into the summer even in Georgia. Fall color is almost scarlet and very strong.  A fast growing, very pendulous dissectum, 'Shojo shidare' will mound into an excellent specimen in just a few years. 'Shojo shidare' is rare in the trade because it can be difficult to propogate, which is all the better for you collectors if you should be lucky enough to find one. This little maple with very fine dissected leaves is an excellent addition to any garden. Among dissectums only 'Red filigree Lace' and 'Beni komo no su' have finer foliage. 'Red Feathers' does seem to grow faster than it's fine leafed cousins. Starting very bright red in spring the foliage darkens with the heat of summer turning green in hot climates before putting on a wonderful crimson show in fall. Discovered in 1980 and introduced in 1995 by John Vermeullen and Sons nursery this plant was actually a seedling off of the original 'Burgundy Lace' (also a John Vermeullen and Sons introduction in 1945). During evaluation this plant was labeled Rilas Red and occasionally this plant will show up with this incorrect name, leading one to believe that some plants escaped the nursery before introduction. 10 years Size: Height 2-3 Feet Width 3-5 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Kin pai’ is a variegated form of ‘Osakazuki’. Everything about ‘Kin pai’ is similar to that of its parent plant, ‘Osakazuki’, except for the pink and red edges to the leaves. The leaves of ‘Kin pai’ are also much narrower than the large leaves of ‘Osakazuki’. The variegation on the leaves of ‘Kin pai’ is most prominent in the spring, but can be seen pretty much all Sumer as well. Fall color is then a fiery red that is a true show stopper. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 6-8 feet

This selection from Hefner's Nursery in Conover, NC is the latest edition to the better than 'Bloodgood' saga. Everyone is always looking for a 'Bloodgood' type tree that will tolerate sun and heat in hotter climates and stay red all summer long. 'Heffner's Red Select' is definitely better than 'Bloodgood' but as to whether or not this is the holy grail, the jury is still out. Either way this is a nice small round topped tree. Emerging bright red in spring, the foliage quickly turns a very dark burgundy. The dark color should hold well through summer in all but the hottest climates. Acer palmatum ‘Baby Ghost’ is the smallest of the “Ghost” series of reticulated Japanese maples. ‘Baby Ghost’ first leafs out with an amber color leaf that transitions to red. Leaves then fade to burgundy and ultimately to green which maintains throughout the summer. Fall color is orange-red. ‘Baby Ghost’ has excellent reticulated variegation in early spring, but that mostly fades for the duration of the summer. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Aoyagi’ means green coral and the green coral bark  is considered to be the most outstanding feature of this tree. For me, while the bark on new shoots is an interesting green the bark never quite lives up to its promise. but there is a completely different outstanding reason to grow this tree. The leaves in spring come out an amazing chartreuse before turning more green in summer. Fall color is yellow.10 Year size:  Height:  8-10  Feet    Width:  6-8  Feet

Similar to 'Kurui jishi' and 'Okushimo' with small upturned or slightly curled leaves 'Hippy Fin Mo' has a great texture and small stature that should assure it a spot in any garden. Partial shade is required. While older specimens may reach 10 feet this tree is very slow growing and even slower in hot climates. This is a great small plant for containers. ‘Spring Delight’ is a green weeping variety of Japanese maple that emerges in spring with light green leaves with pink edges. 'Ruby de Sofia' is a beautiful reticulated variety that has fantastic colorations of pink and white in the spring. Those colors then turn to green for the summer, still maintaining the reticulated style. 'Ruby de sofia' earned it's name by putting on a brilliant showing of ruby red leaves in fall. This tree was introduced by Angel Mendoza and named after his daughter Sofia. We are also quite partial to this tree; in addition to it's amazing colors and growing habits, we also have a daughter Sophia who's birthstone is Ruby!   

Acer palmatum 'Kawahara Rose' is a beautiful corallinum type Japanese maple. 'Kawahara Rose' emerges in spring with a gorgeous rosy pinkish red color. These pinkish leaves then transition to orange and eventually green by summer. In late summer there is often a flush of new growth which is the rosy spring color that stands out beautifully on top of the older green foliage.
