It emerges in the spring with heavily dissected leaves that have tones of green and orange in early spring  and as the sun works it's magic on the foliage it quickly turns brick red. This red color holds into the early summer. As spring turns into summer the older leaves start to slowly turn green, this process happens over a number of weeks during which the leaves appear molted with infused colors of green and purple washed across each leaf. About the time the entire plant becomes green in mid to late summer 'Orangeola' decides it is time to grow again, putting out red new growth that lays over the older foliage. Then in fall it really puts on a show with traffic stopping bright orange-red leaves. 'Orangeola' does extremely well in hotter climates and can be grown in sun or shade. More red colors will be attained in sunnier locations, but 'Orangeola' will grow well in shade as well. Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' is a Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple with Brilliant Red Color Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' is a dwarf Japanese maple that is extremely popular for its brilliant red color. 'Red Dragon' will stay more red during summer than most varieties. The coarse leaves begin the spring dark red and become more red as temperatures increase. As summer temperatures reach their peak and most other red varieties have turned green 'Red Dragon' still has a good bit of red left on it's leaves. Fall color is a dramatic crimson red. The growth habit of 'Red Dragon' is not as pendulous as other weeping cultivars, at times it grows almost prostrate. 'Red Dragon' also stays a little smaller than other dwarf Japanese maples. Acer palmatum 'Waterfall' Dwarf Japanese Maple with Green Lace Leaves and the Weeping "Waterfall" Shape Acer palmatum ‘Waterfall’ is a stunning weeping dwarf Japanese maple with green lacy leaves. 'Waterfall' is quite similar to Acer palmatum 'Viridis', however the leaf shape can be slightly different as well as different variations of yellow and orange fall color. Acer palmatum 'Waterfall' emerges in spring with bright lime green color that darkens as the temperatures get warmer in the summer. 'Waterfall' displays an excellent green color through the spring and summer that will really brighten up a landscape. In the fall 'Waterfall' will turn bright yellow and orange and is a true show stopper. Given the name 'Waterfall' it should come as no surprise that it is a weeping dwarf Japanese maple with cascading, waterfall-like growth. 'Waterfall' is a medium growing dwarf Japanese maple that should reach about 4 to 6 feet tall and about as wide. 'Waterfall' has elegant weeping branches that give the tree nice flow and character. Acer palmatum 'Waterfall' is a strong growing dwarf Japanese maple that will grow well in zones 5 through 9. In many areas of the country 'Waterfall' will be able to handle full sun. It can even tolerate full sun in hotter climates but would certainly appreciate a break from the hot afternoon sun if possible. We see very little difference in shape or leaf size at our nursery, although it may be slightly slower growing. Where we do see a huge difference is in the fall color which in addition to the bright yellow and gold of 'Viridis', 'Waterfall' displays wonderful reds and oranges washed across the leaves. ‘Heartbeat’ is an Australian cultivar that is just making its way into the gardening culture of the United States. 'Heartbeat' would be a great addition to any garden. The leaves are extremely dissected with lobes that are held very far apart, making the overall leaf almost appear round. The habit is very low and spreading forming a plant that is much wider than tall. Spring color is more red and less purple than other similar Japanese Maples. As summer approaches leaves turn first bronze then green but this vigorous grower seems to put on new red growth at the tips all summer long even in hot climates. The name, ‘Octopus’, aptly describes this cultivar with long aching branches that spread like tentacles in all directions. 'Octopus' forms a large spreading irregular mound. The deeply dissected leaves emerge a bright pink red in early spring before turning to dark purple. When summers heat arrives the leaves first bronze before becoming mostly dark green in hot climates. This mounding form of maple with adds a little something different to the garden. It is fairly rare to see a maple with this growth habit that does not have dissected leaves. Growing slightly upright when young 'Jiro shidare' which means white cascading soon becomes spreading and then quite pendulous with age. The new leaves in spring are light green almost yellow and darken as they age giving the entire tree a two-toned effect that is quite striking. Although we do not recommend this plant for full sun in the Southeast, if you place it where it can get direct morning or late evening sun the new growth as it first appears will be tinted red. Acer palmatum Hoshi Zora' is a Japanese maple with a dramatic weeping habit. 'Hoshi Zora' is very similar to the ever popular 'Ryusei'. 'Hoshi Zora' has bright green leaves in the spring that darken to an emerald green in the summer. Fall color is a bright and stunning orange. 'Hoshi Zora' grows with mostly just a downward, weeping habit. 'Hoshi Zora' will need to be staked to achieve any measurable height.
