This little maple with very fine dissected leaves is an excellent addition to any garden. Among dissectums only 'Red filigree Lace' and 'Beni komo no su' have finer foliage. 'Red Feathers' does seem to grow faster than it's fine leafed cousins. Starting very bright red in spring the foliage darkens with the heat of summer turning green in hot climates before putting on a wonderful crimson show in fall. Discovered in 1980 and introduced in 1995 by John Vermeullen and Sons nursery this plant was actually a seedling off of the original 'Burgundy Lace' (also a John Vermeullen and Sons introduction in 1945). During evaluation this plant was labeled Rilas Red and occasionally this plant will show up with this incorrect name, leading one to believe that some plants escaped the nursery before introduction.

Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. The growth habit is still something we are evaluating, but thus far to have a rather unique shape while becoming the same size as most other Japanese maples in this category. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

The leaves of ‘Dai’ are quite fine compared to other similar lace leaf Japanese maples. ‘Dai’ emerges in spring with a bright red color to the foliage with pink and orange undertones. ‘Dai’ then turns green by summer. ‘Dai’ then shows out again in the fall with an array of fiery reds and oranges. ‘Dai’ is a small growing Japanese maple with a strong weeping habit. Acer palmatum ‘Beni shidare’ is one of the most pendulous varieties we grow. It has deep purple red color in spring and maintains its color well into summer before turning bronze and then green. Fall color is bright red and striking. This is probably one of the oldest red dissectum forms, as the name simply means red cascading, at one time all red weeping forms were given this name. Over time a superior clone must have been selected and remains in production today. Acer palmatum 'Rikuzen shidare' Weeping Japanese Maple

'Rikuzen shidare' has a weeping habit and grows similarly to Ryu sei. It will only grow as tall as it is staked and will weep down to the ground from there. Where it differs from Ryusei is in it's stunning large leaves. The leaves on Rikuzen shidare have a similar shape to an upright grower called 'Osakazuki'. Fall color on Rikuzen shidare is also different from Ryusei as it goes yellow in the fall verses red.
