Weeping Japanese Maples

‘Disscetum Nigrum’ is known for the silver hairs covering the emerging foliage in early spring,  this old cultivar is a great addition to any garden. Although originally found in Japan, 'Dissectum Nigrum' was named in the Netherlands in 1938. Spring color is dark red and holds well into the summer in most areas but does bronze before turning an attractive olive green rather quickly in hot climates. Fall color is bright red. This mounding form of maple with adds a little something different to the garden. It is fairly rare to see a maple with this growth habit that does not have dissected leaves. Growing slightly upright when young 'Jiro shidare' which means white cascading soon becomes spreading and then quite pendulous with age. New leaves emerge with a pink cast in spring before quickly turning a nice medium green. Fall color is crimson red. 10 Year Size:  Height: 5-7 Feet Width: 6-8 Feet

The leaf of 'Washi-no-o’ is a little more coarse than some dissectums and the margins of each lobe are cut more regularly and less deep than most dissectums giving it a very unique texture. This mounding shrub type maple tolerates more sun than most green lace leafs. I have even grown this cultivar in full sun in Atlanta, Georgia but some shade would be appreciated. Acer palmatum 'Eye of the Tiger' is a dwarf Japanese maple with delicate lacy leaves. These small leaves emerge in spring with a light red to almost peachy color. By summer the leaves turn to a light green. Summer flushes of new growth offer more splashes of the vibrant spring color across the foliage. Fall color is then a bright red. 'Eye of the Tiger' has a very low and spreading growth habit. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet   Width: 4-6 feet

This is a very rare reticulated leaf form dissectum. The new leaves in spring are light green sometimes almost white with dark veins. A great plant for many parts of the world. Although very beautiful 'Filigree' is more of a collector plant in hotter climates as summers heat will really do a number on it around August,  causing it to drop a large percentage of it's leaves. This is caused by heat and not lack of water. If you must try your luck with this plant in hotter climates please place in a cool shady spot. Acer palmatum ‘Bewely’s Red’ is a beautiful red lace leaf Japanese maple. This Dissectum is unique in that it grows more upright than most other lace leaf varieties. ‘Bewely’s Red’ has wonderful red leaves in spring that hold their color well throughout the year. ‘Bewely’s Red’ also performs well in full sun even in hot climates.10 Year Size: Height: 6-8 feet Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Monticello Gardens’ is a lace leaf Japanese maple with a weeping, sprawling habit. There are some red Japanese maples that hold their red color well in the summer and then there is ‘Monticello Gardens’. This tree stays red all the time. ‘Monticello Gardens’ is red in the spring, it is red in the summer and then it is, of course, red in the fall. I imagine if it wasn’t deciduous, it would find a way to be red in the winter as well. ‘Monticello Gardens’ is the perfect Japanese maple for the people that don’t want their red Japanese maple to lose its color in the summer.10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum Hoshi Zora' is a Japanese maple with a dramatic weeping habit. 'Hoshi Zora' is very similar to the ever popular 'Ryusei'. 'Hoshi Zora' has bright green leaves in the spring that darken to an emerald green in the summer. Fall color is a bright and stunning orange. 'Hoshi Zora' grows with mostly just a downward, weeping habit. 'Hoshi Zora' will need to be staked to achieve any measurable height. This makes 'Hoshi Zora' a fantastic tree for planters or tall pots. 10 Year Size: Height: 1-2 feet   Width: 4-6 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Pendula Angustilobum’ is a fast growing lace leaf with yellow-green leaves in the spring. These leaves turn to a light green in the summer. In the fall, ‘Pendula Angustilobum’ puts on a show with bright yellow to orange foliage. ‘Pendula Angustilobum’ has a wide spreading habit.10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 6-8 feet

One of the older dissectums in cultivation in Europe having been grown for well over 100 years. It is still popular today although competition from varieties that hold color longer into summer has caused production to decrease.  Emerging green dusted with red in shady areas to a rusty red in more sun, 'Ornatum' forms a large graceful shrub when mature. While very heat tolerant 'Ornatum' does prefer light shade in hot climates. The unusual thing is that this plant is one of the few red dissectums that turns orange or even yellow-orange in fall.10 Year Size:  Height: 4-6 Feet    Width 6-8 Feet

Acer palmatum ‘Anticipation’ is a Maple Ridge Nursery introduction that we have had some fun with over the past few years. It is a beautiful red lace leaf that seems to have an irregular growth habit. It’s most unique feature however, is how late this tree emerges in the spring. This is where the name ‘Anticipation comes from. ‘Anticipation’ routinely waits until the middle to end of April here in Georgia to leaf out, easily the last cultivar at our nursery to do so. There were many years that we thought the tree was dead because it had been so long. This may not seem like a benefit at first, but this trait protects ‘Anticipation’ from any late freezes or frosts. Regardless of the tree’s quirks, ‘Anticipation’ is a beautiful Japanese maple that has excellent red color in the spring that holds quite well throughout the summer even in the heat. Fall color is then a nice bright red. The growth habit is still something we are evaluating, but thus far to have a rather unique shape while becoming the same size as most other Japanese maples in this category. 10 Year Size: Height: 4-6 feet Width: 4-6 feet

‘Spring Delight’ is a green weeping variety of Japanese maple that emerges in spring with light green leaves with pink edges. Acer sieboldianum ‘Seki no kegan’ is like many other sieboldianum maples in that it is extremely hardy and displays wonderful orange. red and yellow fall color. What sets this cultivar apart is its growth habit. Starting prostrate or even slightly upright when young, with age this cool little plant becomes extremely pendulous. 10 Year Size:   Height: 3-4 Feet   Width: 6-8 feet

Acer palmatum ‘Yellow Cascade’ is a weeping Japanese maple with broad palmate leaves. This is quite unusual as most weeping Japanese maples have dissected leaves. ‘Yellow Cascade’ has a golden yellow color in the spring and summer before turning a vibrant orange in the fall. This is a fast growing variety that will need to be staked to achieve the desired height. 10 Year Size: Height: 3-5 feet Width: 4-6 feet

'Ao jutan' is a deeply dissected japonicum that is more spreading than cascading. The wonderfully graceful low habit lends itself to many uses in the garden. Fall color is great mix of yellow, orange, red and even sometimes purple. 'Rikuzen shidare' has a weeping habit and grows similarly to Ryu sei. It will only grow as tall as it is staked and will weep down to the ground from there. Where it differs from Ryusei is in it's stunning large leaves. The leaves on Rikuzen shidare have a similar shape to an upright grower called 'Osakazuki'. Fall color on Rikuzen shidare is also different from Ryusei as it goes yellow in the fall verses red.  Spring & Summer Color: Green Fall Color: Yellow Height: As high as you stake it, but naturally quite short
