A fast growing cultivar that comes out more orange red than purple red in early spring but rapidly darkens as it is exposed to the spring sun, 'Oshio beni' is a strong grower. What 'Oshio beni' lacks in summer color it more than makes up for in the fall when the foliage turns a bright orange red. The name means the great red tide.

Acer palmatum 'Scolopenrifolium rubrum' is a great red linearlobum type Japanese maple that is often confused with some of the other linearlobum varieties and maybe even used as a catch all name for red linearlobum plants. Our cultivar however is very distinct. The long narrow lobs are somewhat wider than plants like Red Pygmy but more narrow than 'Beni otake'. It is definitely different than 'Atrolineare' but may be synonymous with Keiser. While the overall growth tends to be slow and bushy sometimes new limbs can grow three or 4 feet in just a few weeks. These limbs are generally unattractive and should be pruned. The spring color is a very attractive dark red holding into well summer before turning bronze. Fall color is wonderful and often described as raspberry red.

Acer palmatum 'Oki kasane' Corallinum Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Oki kasane’ is a member of the Corallinum group of Japanese maples. All of these Corallinum type Japanese maples leaf out very early in the spring, and when they do, ‘Oki kasane’ has beautiful peachy orange foliage. This incredible color typically holds through April. The colors then transition to orange and then eventually green by the end of May. Much like other Corallinum type Japanese maples and maybe more than the others, ‘Oki kasane’ will usually push new growth in the summer which resembles the bright orange-red foliage of spring. This new growth on top of the olive green foliage is extremely attractive. Fall color is then orange to red.

I have read many descriptions of this plant written by authors who consider this cultivar very similar to its parent. I have to respectfully disagree. At least in our climate this plant is very different. In early spring 'Sherwood Flame' may be quite purple like its parent but the rest of the year it appears much more red than burgundy. Discovered as a chance seedling by J.R.P. van Hoey Smith this distinctive cultivar bears the name of the arboretum where it was discovered. This fast growing cultivar tends to be mostly vase shaped for many years, although very old specimens begin to get more broad with age. The 3 things for which Trompenburg is most famous all have to do with the foliage. The first is the spring color which is a dark purple sometimes almost appearing brown or chocolate turning more red as summer begins but holding a nice color well into even an Atlanta summer. The second is the very sharp serrations to the lobes of the leaf. The third is the way the lobes curl at the ends, but this does not always appear until the tree somewhat matures. Trompenburg will tolerate full Sun even in the south. Fall color is a brilliant scarlet red.
